If you think school starts too early, you aren't the only one.

A new policy statement published by the American Academy of Pediatrics is on the side of groggy students falling asleep at their desks and their parents who are tired of nagging them to get out of bed in the morning.

I'm amazed at the schedules our students keep, and I'm horrified that so many of them are averaging only six hours of sleep a night. I'm typically in bed by 9:30, because the first of my kids arises at around 5:00. I'm getting seven-plus hours of sleep, and I'm still exhausted. I have no idea how the kids manage on less. I'd be a basket case if I was getting only six hours a night.

According to the article: "Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts."

So why is the focus always on the silly but headline-grabbing notion that school should start later, rather than simply going to bed earlier? People, including teenagers, have far more control over their bedtime than over what time school and businesses open.

Because research on the role of melatonin indicates that teenagers experience a shift in the secretion schedule of this hormone that changes their sleep patterns. They are naturally more wakeful at night, so it becomes very difficult for them to fall asleep earlier. Furthermore, it does seem as if schools are starting earlier than ever. My home room started at 7:55, but my kids are at their desks at 7:00, and they don't get home any earlier than I did. That is one looooong day, and they still have at least a couple of hours of studying to do.

Really. Just go to bed earlier. A kid who thinks being a night owl is cool is going to pay for it the next morning. Sleep is cool, get some of it.

My kids went to a school that started at 9 am. That was a time waster. The kids started later in the day so they got home later. I found it a lot more chaotic. There was less time after school time to get things done. With so many parents who work, a lot of what used to be after school activities like sports or scouts is now in the evenings. There was no time to wind down before bed. I think it's better when the kids start the day earlier. If they need more sleep, then they probably need to look at their schedules.

How do they adjust their schedules? The bus picks up just after six, which means for much of the year, my high schoolers are leaving before dawn, and they arrive home a little before 4:00. In order to get the AAP recommended nine-plus hours of sleep, they'd have to be heading for bed at about eight! That's not going to work.

Your high schoolers went to school at nine? Because it's teens who are the focus of this latest flurry of articles about school start times and sleep. It's interesting to note that school-age kids (prior to adolescence) apparently need less sleep than teens, so why are we not sending our elementary-schoolers, who are also much more amenable to earlier bed-times than teens and tend to be raring to go at the crack of dawn anyway, to school at 7:00 and sending our teenagers in between 8:00 and 9:00?

Telling a teen who falls asleep late to "sleep earlier" is like telling a last place finisher at a marathon to "run faster". Many teenagers can't even fall asleep before 11 or 12, it's just not in our natural clock.
