A work ethic. It's entirely missing in the majority of recent graduates and kids in school. Life is not going to be handed to you - you gotta work for it!

Just an addendum...and 'the boss' isn't always 'right'...;-)...
So who is managed must know indeliby how to 'manage up' under thise circumstances. I'd suggest if one does not know how to marry interpersonal skills with 'communication' skills then it will limit one's advancement if the intention is to move up.
As you go higher things revolve more on how you interact on a personal level and not actually on doing the nuts and bolts of a position.
When learning a language students do develop communication skills.
Communication can be broken down into 4 basic ways to communicate
Passive communications are listening and reading.
Active communications are talking and writing.
If you can't listen or read, you are severely impaired with your ability to talk (or write).
With that said I agree with McWick. It's all about a work ethic.
