I learned the name of John Paul Jones's ship. It was called the Half Moon. But I can't tell you who John Paul Jones was or why I should care about the name of his ship. How's that for useless crap?
The Half Moon was Henrik Hudson's Ship and he used it to discover the great river of the East named after him of course. John Paul Jones ( The Father of the United States Navy) sailed the Bon Homme Richard an old French frigate on its last legs to victory over a Royal Navy frigate and capturing it as his new flag ship off the coast of the United Kingdom. The Bon Homme Richard sank as a result of the battle. Its a good thing the Royal Navy vessel he captured was sea worthy. Otherwise Captain Jones would have had a long swim back to our new nation.

Lol John Paul Jones is a famous bassist formally from Led Zeppelin..... your teacher must had been a huge Zep fan as I didn't even know that.....
Haha well I was sent to one of those barely accredited Christian Academies, so my education may not be the norm. I learned plenty about how Jesus Loves me This I know, and how the Bible tells me so....I also learned that the Natives had cool dinner parties with the Colonists (nothing about the mass slaughter of Natives) and in 6th grade "Math." I xfered to a far better school which was teaching Pre Alg in 6th grade and about had a stroke when I saw letters in math problems.
I had a fifth grade teacher who was obsessed with the Titanic. We watched a couple movies about it and he spent endless hours talking about it and how the sinking happened. Note that this was years before the Leonardo Dicaprio movie came out.
Every time someone mentions a province in Canada, a state in the US or a country in South America or Europe, Asia, etc, I'm proud to know where a lot of them are.
Sadly, I don't think many schools teach world geography these days, or the kids don't pay attention.
Do YOU know where Alberta or Rhode Island is? Could you quickly point on a map where Bermuda is?

Geography as a stand alone has mostly been excised from the curriculum. It's now supposed to be "infused" across the Social Studies.
Which is fine until you run into a class full of high school students who don't know how to use the map keys. Then comes "remediation".
Some of the music mentioned, from the patriotic songs to folk songs to Motown, are part of what's called cultural literacy.
Random "crap" is part of a well-rounded education.
Wrong crap is something else.
From one of my worthless teachers:
"Brontosauruses had two brains, one in the head and one in the tail. They were so large that one brain was not enough, and each brain controlled half the dinosaur."
At least I knew where the teacher's brain had ended up.

That actually was the theory for a long time about how an animal as large as a Bront controlled its body.

I loved geography class as well!
We had to learn where mountain chains were located, major lakes, oceans, rivers, etc.
We also learned the capitals of countries and the source of their economies, and also their major exports!
I don't think Geography is taught anymore, in any grade. Such a shame.
