Agreed. As a former ESL student myself, principles of syntax (particularly ones so debated as the positioning of prepositions), are not necessary in this context.
As for intensive instruction in English as a second language, I know some have had good fortune with
this. Also, while I had the good fortune of taking ESL/ELL through my public school, I can tell you my parents used a private tutor who had a background in their primary language (French) and English.
