That is not what I meant, I meant only some schools are accepting AP credits and that number is decreasing, or at least the score that they will accept. Not that the are only accepting some of the credits. Maybe your daughter didn't get 5s. But as I said, they are accepting more and more DE credits which are college credit.

DE credits though may also not be useful for requirements depending upon what courses they are. Sometimes even community college credits that are not dual for high school are not accepted for certain colleges. It pays to check on this for the particular college the student wants to attend.

My youngest took AP classes, DE classes and a physical class at a branch campus of a State U. None of them transferred directly to his private OOS college, but they did give him sophomore status as a freshman, which helped in housing and class selection freshman year. His second year, GPA was key to housing selection. We didn't especially want our kids to finish college sooner than four years. We wanted them to focus on learning, not just academics, but life lessons in a semi-controlled environment as adults. All three were able to do study abroads, which were not much more than their in-place colleges, but life changing semesters. There are decades to spend working and earning a living. If the students can afford (yes, that's key) to spend four years in college, why rush it?

Yes, this is a vital point and I totally left it out. Thanks.

We are lucky enough that our local community college is really well ranked, and as part of a college collective our students have the option of actually getting the credits from a local university.

I know it probably sounds ignorant, but what are "DE" credits? Haven't heard of them around here. Local schools have AP, but don't have IB and no one has mentioned DE.

DE -Dual Enrollment or Concurrent Enrollment, allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. Students enroll in college courses that may be delivered either face to face, on-line or through videoconferencing at the high school or on the college campus. These courses provide the same rigor and expect the same level of performance as any college course.

I was a smart kid. I started university at 14...in France! And here's why. My father was horrible. He was intensely controlling and he just knew I was going to ruin my life and be a source of shame. More than anything else I think he was worried I was going to get pregnant. I was rarely given permission to do anything with my friends and on the occasion I was allowed to go to a school function or a little league game I could almost be sure he was out there somewhere...following me. I can remember being severely punished for talking to a male classmate in a concession line. Or talking to male classmates sitting in the bleachers close to me. Finally I gave up on asking permission to do anything outside of school. As long as I got straight A's, my home life was tolerable. Anything less and I was grounded. No phone, no TV. After I came home from school I had to sit at the dining room table with my textbooks till bedtime. It was just easier to get straight A's.

When I was about 10 I figured out my father was a nut case. I was rational and he was not. School was my only escape so I did well. He loved to see me achieve academically. That made him happy and anything I needed for school was OK with him. So I started reading about scholarship opportunities as a possible escape. This was way before the internet so it was real work. No Google to do all the work for me. I found the one I wanted, in France, and the admission requirement was based on a test. And I knew I could take tests! I'm sure my father thought I would fail but it was education related so he let me take the test. I studied like a demon and I didn't just pass, I got one of the top scores. Free education. It was a complete scholarship, school, books, room and board. He couldn't resist and let me go.

Sweet freedom! I did well and my scholarship was extended. I stayed 5 years and came home with a BS/MS. And I didn't get pregnant either! But I did learn I was capable of taking care of myself. My experience shaped the rest of my life and I will always be glad I had the courage to leave. I ended up skipping 3 years of HS and it was worth it!

why are parents reluctant??

if a student moves up 2 grades that student is now at a severe disadvantage when it comes to phys-ed or any sports... chances are they will be much smaller and lighter and shorter

and yeah,,,maybe sports are not their focus since they are advancing academically,,

but also consider the age difference ... if you have classmates that are two years younger,,,do they get invited to parties?? are you 15 with classmates of 17 yr olds??

this is why many kids will not want to advance themselves

I had a good friend that advanced and he got teased ...and he hated it he was always smaller ...and before he advanced he did play sports but once he advanced ..none at all

The class I teach is DE, and we are actually having some issues about how or even whether we need to enact the next gen science standards. Can't actually get a real answer from the state about it. But that is way off topic....

I skipped two grades, 2nd and 5th. It allowed me to graduate high school at 15 and college at 19. By the time most kids were getting out of high school I was in business.
