The biggest graduation present I am hoping for when my kids get to that stage (the oldest will be a junior in high school this year) is self-sufficient and financially responsible adults who appreciate their parents.
Sounds like a tradition the Koreans enjoy.
Good for them.
I didn't expect monetary gifts. And I did not receive any.
My kids did well in college, got great jobs, and are productive citizens. That is thanks enough.
I'll skip most of the back ground & get to the point. After our daughter graduated and I needed to start paying back the Parent Plus loans that I took out to help her through her last years of college it was a much larger financial burden than I realized. When I spoke to the student loan company to see if I could lower my payments or something the loan officer very flippantly said "Why are you paying back those loans? Most graduates take over paying all the Parent Plus loans from their parents with the money that they are earning at their great jobs. It is the graduates responsibility to pay those loans. " He also added (probably "off script") that some graduates even pay back their parents for all of the money that they spend on their college education.
I pointed out that not all new graduates, including my daughter, have a "great job" right out of college.

Too True. Great response to a somewhat rude response.
