I used to order our textbooks from the vendors every year. No big deal. We just looked through catalogs. Sometimes, though, they only sold in bulk- I could never get just one extra copy for a new student. It depends upon what company you are looking at. Houghton-Mifflin? Find out what company makes the textbook.
The only drawback I saw was that I could not order simply one book- it had to be at least 25, or something like that. And it ofter had to be done with a school code. But with the rise in homeschooling, I'll bet things have changed.

Oops, sorry.
I'm old. I still think of books as, well, those things you hold in you hand and read. Sorry!

My understanding (and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong) is that all schoolbooks being published now by law have to be made available electronically. However, they might not be available so readily on the web. You might need to purchase a license or something to be able to access textbooks, and if I were a textbook company, I'd be leery of granting licenses to individuals - more likely they would be granted to schools or districts for a lot of money.
As far as other books online, you can try sites like bookshare.

I know it's possible to buy many used textbooks from Amazon.com, which operates even overseas, or simply email the textbook publishers and purchase a copy of the texts you need.
Also, many textbook publishers have CD versions or online versions of their texts, but I think it helps to go right to the sites. For example, we just purchased a physical textbook from Prentice-Hall, but they also have the text online or on CD if you wished to have it in that format.

At least at Prentice-Hall they have. I just ordered a science textbook for homeschool use through them.

my kids (elementary) can access some of their books online but they are given a login/password. I am assuming the school district has to pay for that as part of the cost of the book.
I see in a lot of higher grades that the teacher has a class set and the kids keep their books at home b/c a lot aren't allowed to carry backpacks (I believe for security) This seems like a waste of money seeing the schools change books every few years.
