That's why administration gets paid the big bucks. To research different programs. It cannot be an accurate general review (I have not read it... I have no idea what is on that site - again leave that for our math specialist) because each state has a different set of standards. I know that we use one program for a few of the standards and another for others. There was no "perfect fit" with any of them for our district in NJ. We use a lot of different resources.

I am sure though, that there is not a standard that requires a certain time limit to know math facts. We all use some variety of "Mad Minute" as a fun activity to promote the development of retaining these facts, but time is not a priority. Instant recall per individual is what we are striving for. As teachers, we just want them to learn their facts - nothing more, nothing less.

KUMON is not jusy math facts...it is also fraction...when you master fractions, you move into AlgI and then onto AlgII. Now just think if your child already knows all that what a breeze HS math would be..all A's no struggle and AP math a breeze...clep out of College math. It is an investment...what is 20 to 30 minutes of daily practice out of a 24-hour day? You do know that the first quarter of a child's life should be devoted to education, this prepares him/her for the 2nd quarter , where he will have to earn a living...right?

I think that a child's life should focus on learning how to love learning, not memorizing rote facts. Just my .02

All of you who are American Primary School Teachers - shut up. You are amoung the worst in the world at what you do. Japan, just so you know, is competitive at the top of the list.

Kumun is not the only way to teach math and reading, but it eliminates gender-gaps in scoring, and it achieves much higher objectives than you dream of in your backwards classrooms. Some students who work with kumun are able to handle calculus before high-school. I wish this had been available when I was young.

Kumun is about making basic reading and basic math so inherently easy to a child's mind that they excel in all subjects. It is not about culture or focusing too much on math. It is about actually teaching children. The fact that so-called educators don't already know this is disgusting. Just go shoot yourselves.

One day, perhaps, I can be as knowledgeable as you.

And it's spelled K-u-m-O-n.

How is Kumon for reading? It seems many use it for math alone.
