Heck, look at World War II from the Nazi perspective. They were just trying to acquire more space for agriculture, natural resources, and an expanding population. The Soviet Union had space in abundance. Plus, they were trying to rid Europe of undesirable elements such as Jews, Gypsies, Communists, certain Slavic peoples, etc.
And we get all bent out of shape about it
The winner gets to write and control history. That is why most people today think the USA was more instrumental in defeating the Nazi's than the Russians were. It is a terrible lie. An embarrassing lie.
Another thing most people are in denial of...almost all of us would have been Nazi's if we had lived there during the 30's. Heroes who risk their lives to defy tyranny are very rare. Most are put to death. A few survivors live to have books and movies made about them.
Heck, even the US Navy had two ballistic missile submarines named USS Robert E. Lee and USS Stonewall Jackson. And there's a cruiser in active service named USS Chancellorsville, after a Confederate victory.
Nobody is perfect, not even close. We are doing better than many if we can avoid being generally malevolent.
The ultra left demanding absolute perfection is indicative of a mind that simply can't, or will not, grasp the true reality of life on earth. They will change once they get a real job, move out of the basement, pay some bills and have some responsibility in the real world. Of course some will lock unto a job that keeps them safely tucked inside their glass bubble resplendent with kaleidescope eyes.
Endeavoring to micro manage how others speak and think is a very dangerous mind set. Tens of millions have died at the hands of such intrusive micro managers.
I don't have a lot of emotional energy about changing or not changing names of schools. But then, I've never been a fan of naming public buildings after politicians, which is so, so common in my lifetime. Obviously, one problem is that of the public's opinion of those people changing over time. When I was a kid, Woodrow Wilson was always depicted as an intellectual president of high principles; lately, we hear a lot more about him resegregating the federal government. If it were possible, I wish we could just rename everything to something more neutral and be done with the arguing about labels. It would be better if we actually focussed on teaching a complete version of our history and helping people, rather than fussing over symbols.
When and where was that? When did they remove the name?
