4 day trip too long and far for 6th grader? (middle school, doctors, requirements)

It's a van, not a tractor trailer or a bus. Do people really have troubles driving vans?
I think 6th grade is a perfect time to start going on longer trips like this. Like many others here, I had an outdoor education camp-out trip in that grade. My sister went to Germany for a week with her class in 7th grade, which isn't too much difference.

There are plenty of scouting trips/camps for kids who are younger. I have a friend who heads up a troop and her girls are all in scouts and I think they have overnight camps starting pretty early. She is sending her two youngest to camp for a week and they are only 8. The sixth grade group uses their cookie money for bigger overnight trips.
^ I get that, it's just that people were telling OP to check with the school, but it's not a school trip. Unless it's part of a larger group it's not likely they do background checks and such on the drivers or chaperones.
This is a cool thing. Cool things should be supported.
If his doesn't have his own cell phone, get him a cheap tracphone or some other inexpensive phone/service...have him text you if he has a problem. You can discuss what constitutes a problem.
Inexperienced drivers and a rented 12- or 15-passenger van driving at night would be a dealbreaker for me. No way. Nothing else really pinged my radar. If you could fly him there, I'd suggest doing that.

Yes, 12- and 15-passenger vans are considered dangerous for transporting children. Or anyone, really.
You have to do what you think is best for your child. I think 6th grade is a little young for that long of a trip for robotics. It's not like this is the last opportunity. I think it's important for kids to learn that they can't do everything. In our area robotics competitions start in HS and the school will partly fund state and world competitions.
I'm surprised by the posters comparing their HS trips to this poster whose child is 11 or 12.

She most certainly is being over-protective. A 4 day trip too long for a 6th grader? You do know that kids half that age go to summer camps overnight, right?
