My vocabulary is among the smallest in this thread, but I'm still doing better than more than 90% of the population? The test isn't scientific at all.
It's scientific, though statistical might be a more accurate description. It just means that having a large vocabulary isn't as important as our academic institutions make it out to be. What bugs me is all of the people who make a big deal about spelling. LOL You are supposed to check posts and tweets and messages before sending otherwise you must be stupid.

School is about making people anal retentive.
English isn't my first language, I imagine not many native speakers have a vocabulary less than 20,000.
Maybe the statistics may include English learners?
However, I take exception to the test's use of the word "The" as opposed to "A" (or "An"). It implies that there is only one synonym or antonym to a given word when there are likely many others.
I don't think this makes me more advanced or whatever than anyone. Words are just my thing. I wouldn't use 1/4 of the ones in this test in conversation or my writing for any reason.
