Skipping the basics for instant gratification is probably what has an entire country's English-speaking children reading far below their expected reading level.
Exactly. The examples given have no relation to early gradeschool reading, and to the process of gradually building skills. Those examples are like throwing a small child into the deep end of the pool to teach them to swim. No one does that, that I know of.
