High School vs. Academy? (public school, literacy, score, exam)

Why would a public high school be referred to as an Academy? My understanding (and I am sure it is completely wrong...) is that an Academy is almost always a private school?
I think that it certainly gives the wrong impression to others who are researching schools and find an average public school (when I say average, I mean it is a nice,finely staffed school-not great,not horrible) and it is called an Academy?
Do they have to meet a certain criteria to be referred to as such?
my school was an "academy" and was a public school. IDK, maybe it was done to differentiate it from a similar school (Boston Latin School vs Boston Latin Academy). it was technically harder to get into BLS than BLA (both were exam schools, you need a higher score to get into BLS) but both schools were hard to get into and have strong academics. a lot of charter and prep schools seem to have the "academy" moniker. not sure if it means anything at all though
The Academy of Arts and Science came after my high school's name. At the time [when I was in high school] I just thought that it sounded cool, but never really gave it much thought. Looking back, though, we were the first high school in my district to have full computer labs dedicated to each discipline, the first school to have a mandatory computer literacy course for all freshmen; this might be more common nowadays, but keep in mind that I am talking about 1988 here. Instead of a student newspaper and reading daily announcements over a speaker system, our announcements, including the Pledge of Allegiance were conducted from our own TV studio on campus via CCTV (the daily announcements were followed by a news segment and all of the stories featured where researched, conducted, shot, and edited by the students). We also didn't have a large array of jocks, either. My high school had all of the typical sports that you would find at any other high school, including golf; they were just not the selling point and were more or less considered extra curricular instead of school pride.
My high school has since dropped Academy of Arts and Sciences from its title and has replaced it with the word Preparatory.
I should add that my public high school rushed to go high tech all the way back in 1984.
