Dear friends of ours have a 17 year old daughter graduating next month. She is immature for her age and needs at least one year to "catch up." She has not been a stellar student and has little direction.

The parents would like to find a summer program for her that would allow her to learn, gain confidence, and maturity plus have an enriching experience. Mostly a program that would require her to focus on a subject other than herself. :-)

We don't have children so we can not be of much help. I know there are a zillion programs out there - i.e. summer programs in Europe, throughout the US. etc.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

Would getting a job help to let her get income and try to teach her responsibility?

in Europe I think it would be a good choice, as an experience abroad brings maturity and it would give her a chance to see the world differently.

It's hard to recommend something without knowing more about the student...but I like NOLS:

There are a ton of programs depending on what she likes. Outward Bound, NASA, Math Camp, and most local colleges have summer classes for HS students for credit too. I like the idea of the travel ones.
