Not many cows to kill out here. Of course, if we moved to a different area we would learn these things.

Here's my addition...
An educated American should have a basic understanding of world history and a sound understanding of our nation's history and how our government works.

There should be mandatory classes in Human Anatomy and Earth Science.
Because an educated person should be able tell his ass from a hole in the ground.

I personally am okay with the general population having abysmal writing ability, limited spelling proficiency, subpar vocabulary, elementary-level literacy, and a rudimentary grasp on grammar and punctuation at best.
It means that people such as myself will always have jobs doing the writing for, the communicating for, and the teaching of such people.

Every educated person should know and understand this famous phrase:
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."
-Mark Twain.
One must also understand that one must be very quick to forget their "civilized education" when they find themselves in an uncivilized situation....example, all the snoddy "I went to Harvard and therefore my feces doesn't stink!" bravado in the world will not help one when he finds himself in an alley after making a wrong turn and suddenly two thugs swagger towards him, eyes focused intently...all the education in the world will not help you there (unless of course it's a military and/or police education)

Allow me to note that I've never made a wrong "term" into an "ally" to find two thugs swaggering toward me. I must be an elitist.

So, when confronted with these "gentlemen":
You would stand proudly and correct their grammer and comment on their poor posture.
All the education in the world cannot save one in such a situation. In the end, all civilization breaks down and barbarism ensues. Those of us who can survive and, there I say thrive within the said barbarism have either never recieved a formal education or are capable of forgetting our formal educations when the need arises.
No college classroom ever taught me how to tell with one quick glance if someone was troube. No text book ever explained how to tell a stick up kid from an average dealer who leaves alone those whom leave him alone. Understanding how to use such things as broken bottles, an umbrella, or even a newspaper as an improvised weapon are never discussed in the halls of Princeton or Yale. These are all things one must learn the "hard way".
An uneducated street kid might not be able to figuratively survive in Harvard, but a Harvard educated Yuppie preppie would most likely not literally survive on the streets. Whom has the greater disadvantage?

Certainly not, as that would be gauche; however, I might gently correct their misspellings.
