School district bans walking, riding bike to school
School district could backpedal on policy -- Page 1 -- Times Union - Albany NY:2997:
The biking debate started last spring, when school district officials told Kaddo Marino that Adam was violating school rules by biking to class. Walking to the school also is not permitted.

OK if they wanted to make a rule about not allowing people to park bikes on campus due to not wanting to be held liable to what happens to the student's personal property or not allowing them to ride bikes onto campus in order to not be liable for injury to the student or others.....FINE.
But they have no legal right to say what these people do when off campus. NONE. If the kid wanted to ride his bike to a place where he could park his bike off campus and walk from there that's his own business.
BUT THEN....
....The rule disallowing walking to school is OTT....WAY OTT. So if somebody lived next door to the school they would not be allowed to walk it? Un-freggin-believably STUPID policy making by that school board.
I'd tell them to go pound sand.

OMG! I mean, this is nuts. The law was put in place back in the 90's. Someone has not challenged before now?!?!?! At first before reading the article I thought maybe the school was across a major highway from where the students are coming from. Not the case. And it is for the ENTIRE district. So the parents at the neighborhood elementary school can't walk to school w/ their kids?!?!?! Man, that would cause massive traffic around our elementary schools as they are in the middle of neighborhoods and a majority of the kids walk/ride bikes to school.
Somebody back when had a grudge or something happen to them and they thought this was the best thing. And the police and state troopers are even getting involved on the schools side.......... idiots. I do like the concidence of this happening when the same city had a get out and enjoy nature campaign going on, lol.
I'd love to know the history of WHY this law was put into place to start with.

The people who made these rule probably haven't sat on a bike since they were kids themselves....possibly not seen the inside of a gym in the last decade either....but likely frequent the buffet resaurants.

If all those kids walked or rode bikes, think of all the out of work union bus drivers there would be. Anyway we like our kids fat & lazy, don't make them walk.

It seems a bit ridiculous not to let kids do this.

Wow. We live by our neighborhood elementary and middle schools. Driving would actually take longer than walking since we are on a cul-de-sac with an exit for those on foot right by the schools.

The same thing was proposed by a local school district superintendent. He claims riding the bus is safer and no child should walk. However, bus related issues are some of the biggest problem areas for many districts with bullying and discipline problems.
