I'm not sure how this even helps tract lost of stolen computers...unless someone recognizes whoever they snap a photo of. And who exactly would be doing that? It's senseless.

It certainly seems like there are far far more accurate and sure ways of tracking the culprit of stolen equipment than using a webcam (keystroke tracking software, for instance).
It also doesn't seem to address the issue, since this story became public when a student was accused of doing something with his correctly assigned equipment in his own home. Clearly the school is doing more than activating the software after a report of theft.

Class action pirranah I mean attorneys will be killing each other to get in on this easy win.
There's another thread about college degrees and intelligence. I guess this proves the falsehood of any correlation between the two.

Why don't parents simply put a piece of tape over the cam and turn off speakers?

They will now, but before this happened, there was no reason to think it was necessary!

And people wonder why some of us advocate strongly against big government....
It wouldn't surprise me if other school districts were doing the same thing. Lower Merion School District was just the first to get caught.

I’ll bet the person who operates the equipment is the same guy who used to prowl around the neighborhood peeping into windows.
