Default Moving to El Paso legitmate concerns

1. if you have options it is not a good idea to move down to el paso
2. There are shopping centers/grocery stores but very limited. You need to drive at least 4-5 hours to see any great shopping centers/grocery stores.
3. Health care is not great. Doctors/specialities are limited.
4. Even if you move to El Paso, at some point you may want to get out of El Paso.

No offence. This is reality I guess. It is a great training for Military personnel before relocating to overseas.

My assumption is correct? It will be a great idea, if we can discuss how El Paso is greater than what other US cities where similar problem exists. Or simply what other US cities have these 4 concerns I raised!

All depends on what someone wants.

1. El Paso has about the best weather you can find without earthquakes and hurricanes. But if someone can't handle seeing the sun out every day then El Paso might be rough.

2. I don't know what shopping there would be 4-5 hours away driving and doesn't everyone shop on the internet today anyway? As far as groceries, El Paso is one of the more obese cities so it can't be that bad.

3. Most people don't have unusual diseases that they would require highly specialized doctors.

4. Yes it's important to weigh your own personal preferences and "needs" before making a big move. If lots of nearby lakes are important than El Paso isn't the place. Same goes for certain cultural needs. But those who like the desert-mountain climate and wide open skies can like it here. And also those who don't need a lot of opera or ballet can also - besides you can rent dvds of them.

Don't know about the whole shopping thing. El Paso is pretty saturated with malls and retail outlets, unless you're looking for stores like Nordstrom, Anthropologie, J Crew, etc. But then again with the Internet you don't really need every store located in a 50 mile radius anyway.

Health-care wise, its one of the fastest growing fields in the region, and within 10 years will probably be the premier health care region along the border. And like mentioned above, unless you have some strange diseases you don't really need too much variety of specialists for the average healthy person.

Prithere -

(1) Whether El Paso is a good fit largely depends on what you want out of a city. Case in point, the weather which Malamute alluded to a few posts ago. The city you chose should reflect your interests.

(2) Yes, shopping/grocery/dinning options are limited. I noticed that retailers sell different items than in other places as well. For example, Macy's usually has a large section for buisiness attire - slacks, button shirts, etc. but in El Paso Macy's has alot of print t-shirts. Also, we don't have all the brands many cities do, particularily high end clothing lines. But, this point goes back to #1, El Paso is not for everyone but if it fits your lifestyle, you will be able to find all the goods you need.

(3) I have never used the health services here.

(4) People are allowed to leave the city - though services are limited we do have uhaul locations to rent any number of trailers/trucks.

In short - the city has serious problems and "legitimate concerns" but some people do enjoy it. If you are thinking of moving, visit, drive around, and meet some people to see if you like it.

You'll love EL Paso..................if you're an immigrant from Mexico.
It's dirty; corrupt; crowded; hot and ugly. But that's just my opinion.
I have made the best of our situation, but enough is enough. Sometimes I feel
like I'm not even in the U.S. it's so "mexicanized". I'm beyond astounded.
