Mt. Cristo Rey?
Anyone have stories / advice on climbing Mt. Cristo Rey? I know it's usually the thing people only do during holy week and Christmas, and in large groups at that (for safety). Do they allow mountain bikes? Will I get robbed / mugged / attacked and left for dead, only to be eaten by vultures? Should I pack heat? Should I even try? Should I just stay home and stare at Mt. Cristo Rey pics on the Internet? Pasenos, help a 'bro out. Thanks.

I believe you can climb it whenever you want --- but climbing the Franklins appeals to me more because there are many trails and good bike trails. You can go all the way to the top and look out over the NW and NE parts of town -- very nice views. Also the state park up there is very nice and has rangers -- safer for leaving a vehicle.

Ok, I don't want to rain on the parade but I'm not sure if its completely safe up there. My uncle was mugged probably 10 yrs ago. Of course, he was travelling by himself. But is it safe now? I'm not sure.. I'm sure thugs from juarez don't hang out up there all the time, so it's probably pretty safe most of the time. I'd do it alone, but probably on a mountain bike so I could high tail it if I had to.. We really need to get park rangers so everyone can enjoy it all the time.

Cristo Rey
The Diocese should put the people attending Cristo Rey on trains. The trains could depart from the El Paso and Las Cruces train stations. For a small fee people could avoid the the parking hassles. This will help with the automobile congestion and the hike from the parking lot to the mountain. They could make money from the train fee and this would also bring people downtown to visit shops and restaurants in the area.

This is an old thread. Ever since I moved back to EP, I have climbed MCR dozens of times - never any problems. Best time is on a Saturday or Sunday morning. It is safe, there is border patrol all around the mountain, so chances are BP knows if there is anyone up there doing crimes. If you're a runner, this is IMO one of the best climbs in E.P. I say go for it!!

Sun Metro bus route 83 goes to the area if you want to avoid leaving a parked vehicle.
