I just looked that up! Being from Cali I coudln't believe that I'd never heard of that ~ but I am from Northern Cali :-) I was reading how it started back in the earlly 1900's when the colorado river would flood ~ the water went into the Basin, and that is actually how it started, then they purposely filled it with water. It was a pretty busy "hot spot" by the 1950's but yea it went terriby awry ~ thats too bad!

Salton Sea is interesting. It was supposed to be the next great resort area but never made it. I went to visit and there are abandoned houses eaten away by the salt sitting in the water. Sort of ghost town-ish.
In regard to Six Flags in Vallejo CA...there is also a Marine World attached to it which moved there almost 30 years ago or more. It was located in Redwood City on the bay (Oracle headquarters sits on the site now). The Six Flags part was added within the last 10 years I believe because folks I don't think were willing to make the drive just for Marine World. A hellish drive from the main bay area in traffic.

Yes, the owners of Butterfield Trail built the golf course with the intent of adding a resort facility in the not-too-distant future adjacent to the course. I know because I am a local reporter and I interviewed them. They added that the course was built to eventually host an LPGA event and a mid-level PGA tournament.

The new BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure) will be bringing approximatelly 120,000 soldiers AND THEIR FAMILIES. El Paso and Fort Bliss is going to hit 1 million in the next couple of years. We are in desperate need of a REAL THEME PARK. Western Playland is now like one of those traveling fair parks! I'm tired of seeing nothing but shopping centers go up a dozen a week on parcels of land that could very well fit a resort hotel. Wake Up City Council !!!!!!! and smell the coffee... hint!

When you add 90,000 from Las Cruces and all the outlining areas even as far as Carlsbad, you're looking at about 2-million people in the area - not to mention the thousands that are passing through El Paso every week via I-10. Do I think it can work here? Of course I do, I have to believe in my city. I'll tell you what won't work - what we've been doing - nothing!

I don't know if Six Flags is anxious to build right now...didn't they just declare bankruptcy?

And besides...El Paso already has a "theme park." It's called Ciudad Juarez!

Six Flags will probably never happen now due to the theme parks financial situation. However, just because EP can't get a Six Flags doesn't mean we can't get a nice "theme" park here. We just need some rich billionaires and some investors to invest in a theme park. So I am now proposing Wild Wild Western World, Fort Amusement, or the very best McCoyland lol!

Yes, I think the timing's off for getting a big expensive theme park.

True. In the past that was always the first thing people from out of town wanted to see and do. Without Juarez you just have to take them further out of town, Carlsbad, Ruidoso, the Gila Wilderness. Old Mesilla is close though and we still have Franklin State park.

Frankly I'd prefer more cultural activities...a better science museum, better theatre plays, maybe even a big family park (think of a place with a botanical garden, place for biking, weekly musical or theatrical entertainment), etc, rather than another place to ride a rollercoaster.
