Not really surprising that someone feels that - El Paso today is not like the old El Paso that many of us came to know. A lot of the old time families are gone now, their kids moved away. El Paso has become a very large city, very packed in and has lost much of that old-time small town feel that it had even when it was not a small town anymore.

All I can say is that it used to be real nice and there are still pockets of friendliness but people don't seem as open as they once were here - but a lot of the people you see that are not so friendly probably aren't from here either. At one time you could show up here and 3 or 4 people would hand you (a stranger) the keys to their houses in case you needed something but you don't see as much of that.

I have to agree with you on that. Since I've been back I have noticed a lot of less friendly people. Its like you get in an elevator with a group of people and everyone tries their hardest not to acknowledge each other even though your all packed in together. It's funny I think. Not like I remember El Paso to be. As far as it being only locals I have to disagree. I think the combination of Mexican nationals, El Paso natives and the many different cultures Ft. Bliss is bringing in has put El Paso in this odd transition. Like the Brady Bunch trying to figure each other out. I can only speak from personal experience but I have always been appreciative of military and their families having been raised in a military family. I have tried to talk to some wives (husbands are in uniform) even allowed many to go before me in line at department stores and have never not once (I swear) been given a thank you. I don't get upset because I understand that many aren't very happy here or have stresses one can only imagine along with culture shock. So in short, army wives scare me.
