Hey guys, I bought a house a few months ago and my wife is bugging me to turn on the heater. I lived in an apartment before and they had always done it for me, and my dad never really taught me. I have refrigeration and I turned that unit off and changed my thermostat to heat, but it seems like the air blowing out is neither hot nor cold. I read the directions on the furnace and followed them. I have a Trane XB and it does not need to be lit. I have the gas switched to on, but I'm not getting the results I want. Any help would be appreciated.

you sure it doesn't need to be lit? There must must a pilot light there somewhere to light up, gotta make the connection between spark and gas. also, you smelling gas when turned on? just be careful, me - I'd call a furnace guy for help. Don't wanna hear about you on the 6 o'clock news.

Most forced air furnaces today have ignitors that light off the pilot or main burner automatically/electronically. But good advice to call a furnace maintenance person to get expert advice since units vary from mfr to mfr.

1. Make sure the gas line is open to the heater.

2. My unit had an on/off switch behind a panel on the heater unit. Most people leave it on "on" year round. I turn my off/on depending on the season.

Thanks. Found out that I did not turn on the main gas line. Duh! The directions on the furnace made it seem like the gas supply line in the furnace was the only one that needed to be turned on. Now my wife is happy and I don't have to pay anybody to do it. Thanks guys.
