Thanks for this. I wasn't able to see it yesterday as I was at work and the site hosting the image was blocked.

Well, so are some parts of Afghanistan too. The people who live in the hellholes of any major city aren't really the ones who come here looking for advice.

I'm sure there was a point there but I didn't get it.

My point was practically the entire city of El Paso was listed as "recommended." I am familiar with the areas of El Paso that were listed as "not recommended." I even agreed. I simply added that even those areas are not that bad. Nothing more.

Well, it's true, crime wise, nowhere here is all that bad. But there are many parts of El Paso that people would assume would have a lot of problems based on appearances. I mean El Paso, for the most part isn't exactly an affluent city. And most of the city doesn't look like it either. So if you want to live in a sort of "upscale" looking area, well, don't move here. (I'm not complaining, I'm just saying, El Paso is what it is. Take it or leave it.)

Well -- google maps and zwillow are your friends -- there actually are "upscale" neighborhoods in El Paso, and middle class ones - you can decide for yourself by zooming in and having a look around. And it depends a lot on personal tastes. For me the newer subdivisions would be pretty awful but I like a little outdoor space, others don't want or need it. I also don't want to live where people throw beer cans out in their front yard, live behind iron bars and high walls, and have graffitti scrawled all over. But zwillow will let you know if you're trying to get too "upscale" for your means.

And there are maps that show the crime stats -- not just homicides but assaults and burglaries, and the sex offender maps. For those with kids, there are the results of TASS test scores and you could probably find out the SAT scores and how many high school students bothered taking the test.

Illegal haven??? Seriously? Everyone on this board knows that there are a great number of illegal aliens in El Paso. What does that have to do with where someone should live? I am certain that there are illegals living all around me and I am in a great neighborhood.

Maybe you got that there problem living around them there brown people?

Sound about right?

The United States is awesome. If I was born in Mexico I would probably do whatever it takes to head north as well.

That the worst of the worst neighborhoods in Dallas, etc, aren't that bad, relative to the way people were talking about them. Granted there are the gangs, but most living in those areas are the working poor who hate living there but they're stuck.

I'd never live there. But they aren't warzones. Just don't own anything nice and it won't get stolen.

Don't mean to stereotype, but I'm going to anyway. What is it with military folks (especially enlisted types and NCOs) and being so close-minded? The majority of ones I meet in EP grew up in very homogeneous areas (Deep South, Washington, Midwest), did not get the opportunity to travel much until they joined up, and thus freak out when they go to an area that doesn't meet what they picture as "real America". FYI the entire United States is now an "illegal haven" (there are probably more illegals working in the fields in Kansas than there are in El Paso).

Futhermore, how do you know its an "illegal haven"? Do you stop every swarthy looking Mexican fellow on the street and ask for citizenship status? Is it based on your own empirical study of migration throughout the region? Or merely the frequency you see a "Front Chi" license plate on I-10?

The news contributes to this. Especially if they're watching a source that is more bigoted and considers any immigrant a scourge on the face of America (aka somewhere outside their white suburb.)

(note: off topic and I know it.)
