Default One Wednesday in El Paso

Hey There!

I know there have been a couple of threads like this in the past, but I just wanted to see if there is any more recent information.

I'll be visiting El Paso for one day while making a road trip, and just wanted to get a local and not purely 'tourist' perspective on what to do. My only plan so far is to stop along the Mission Trail when heading in to El Paso from the South. (Sadly, I'll have a dog in the car so I can't stay too long at any of these.) And to have an evening meal at the Red Lantern. Are there some other 'must dos' while I'm there? My main focus is to spend time at things that are only available in El Paso, not stuff I can do elsewhere (like outlet malls, movies, etc.).

Thanks!

Don't leave your dog unattended inside your car, it is very hot outside and you don't want to find your dog sick or dead from heat exhaustion, it happen's all the time to children and pets left inside park cars in hot days.

Oh, trust me, I won't. The reason I said I won't be able to stop long is because she will be with me, and I'm sure dogs probably aren't allowed too near any of the missions. Hence, they will basically just be photography shots.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have to check into them.

Ummmm... I think other readers missed the fact that you're asking what can be accomplished in ONE DAY!
And you don't say WHEN this one day trip will be. If it's soon, during the summer heat, there is a limit on what one can do comfortably without roasting in the heat.

Hiking in the Franklin Mountains --- something you can do with your dog. Or if it's too hot to hike up there, you can walk along the famous Rio Grande, and your dog would be welcome and would love it -- there are some nice walking trails and you can get some really nice views of the desert, the mountain, the river and some of the local wildlife if you're lucky.

For me one or the other or both of those would be "must dos" because for one if you're traveling in a car, it's really nice to get out and get some good scenery and physical activity done, either would be quite relaxing, away from the hustle and bustle, and you can see some of what's here.

Yes, it will be soon. It will be at some point during the second week in July.

Thanks! While I don't have to do things with my dog (she can be safely stored in the hotel for part of the day) it is nice to know there are some options for her too!

- the Wyler Tramway is closed Monday-Thursday.
- the drive over TransMountain Road is nice with 2 small free museums at the eastern end (Border Patrol Museum and Museum of Archeology). The downtown El Paso Museum of Art is also free. All are El Paso centric.
- The El Paso Zoo can be done in 2-3 hours
- discount shopping with a Mexican flavor on El Paso Street , & Overland St area, -north of the international bridge (el paso, tx - Google Maps) - & nice old architecture around San Jacinto Square
- Concordia Cemetery - (the original Boot Hill) concordiacemetery.org
- Scenic Drive & the Bhutan architecture at UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) - with view of Juarez
- see the famous border fence http://goo.gl/maps/ID1o

Be sure to visit the San Elizario Historic District on the Mission Trail, near the San Elizario Chapel.
28 Artist Studio/Galleries in the District, a Coffee Shop+, a restaurant, 2 museums, 17+ Historical sites, including the world famous Old El Paso County Jail, where Billy the Kid broke into! Be sure to grab a Walking Tour Guide at the Portales Museum, or the Main Street Mercantile. There are also HistoryTalks at 1pm at the Mercantile on Sundays (Might catch one on Wednesday too) Definitely a great way to spend a day!!
Oh yes, the District is PET FRIENDLY, walk your pets in the galleries to meet the resident critters!!!

Default Huh?

What?! No mention of eating at Chicos Tacos?

Okay, have some wet tacos, plastic cheese hot green sauce in a paper bowl, an El Paso staple. For sure it is junk food, not healty, etc., but just want you want to experience on a road trip.
