My mistake. On Sports Crunch yesterday, they said 10 years. I was going by that.

Yeah it could of been better, but it could of also been worse. Maybe Southwest U. is trying to become more of a major private university in the long run? Which would be a good thing for El Paso.

UTEP is a state/public university and I don't think they are allowed to sponsor a city run stadium. If you look at this list of sponsored sports venues, all of them are sponsored by private companies.

Other Pacific Coast League teams like the Fresno Grizzlies play in Chukchansi Park, which is sponsored by the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino in a 15-year, $16 million deal. Sacramento River Cats's Raley Field is sponsored by the Raley regional supermarket chain in a 20-year, $15 million deal. I'm curious to see how much Southwest U ponied up to put their name all over the new stadium, I highly doubt its anywhere near what the Fresno or Sacramento teams got, but who knows? Since no numbers were released.

El Paso Inc. came out with a good article on Southwest University and their deal with the new downtown stadium.

Southwest University Park.
It's a mouthful but it's growing on me - it's not blatantly commercial like the ATT Stadium or a Helen of Troy Park or Western Refining Field or a Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. I suspect, as others have said, it will be shortened in general usage to The Sup, The Soup, Uni Park etc....
Congratulations to the university, this really gives them exposure (I'd never heard of them) and will help them grow. I wonder who else was interested or in the running.

They moved to Joplin, Mo. The local Tigua Indians owned the Diablos name and team and were kicked out of the city owned Cohen stadium as part of the AAA deal.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the Tiguas sold the team before they were relocated. That is why the Tiguas are not on the hook for all the damage to Cohen Stadium.

I believe you are correct but haven't had time to do the research to support this.

Yeah, the more reputable institutions of higher education in the area (that it can support), the better. I think Texas Tech plans to turn their medical school in El Paso into a full-blown branch campus offering degrees not related to the health sciences and Monterrey Tech, the private Mexican university system, has a prep school in El Paso run by the board for the Juarez campus; they said when they opened the prep school in 2011 that they might open an El Paso campus, which would be their first on the US side of the border. (According to the El Paso Times.) I kind of doubt Monterrey Tech could buy the rights to name a stadium that has nothing to do with their athletic program also.
