Apparently there are so many El Pasoans delinquent on their bills or are on Medicaid/Medicare that once the federal/state reimbursement rates were reduced the medical facility just became unsustainable/insolvent. It's a scary thought. If the reimbursement rates are reduced any further how long will the city be able to keep this facility running?

I wonder how much of this debt is from foreign countries?

The debt is owed to UMC, and the Children's Hospital will have to renegotiate it's payment schedule to UMC.
It seems to be a shell game. UMC (formerly Thomason) is the tax payer supported county hospital, but the Children'a Hospital was set up as a separate legal entity, with debt to UMC, and took over UMC's pediatric services.
In 2007 the city approved a $120 million bond to build the new hospital. The Children's Hospital occupies about 60% of the new tower and UMC the remaining 40%. The Children's Hospital took on about $92 million in debt payable to UMC. $33 million has been paid with $59 million remaining. Not bad considering the Children's Hospital has only been open 2 years.

Hang onto your wallets -- it's the taxpayers who are going to end up having to cough up. It sure didn't take them long to get deep into debt -- all the free healthcare for all.

Health care is a right. Then again, it being "free," that is, a government service, means we all pay for it. So, here's the bill, fork it on over. Somebody's going to have to however it goes.

Ummm....Health care is NOT a right, not a word of it in the constitution. A benefit, maybe, but a RIGHT, not even close.
