Best North of the border for sure. I'd love to have some authentic Mexican food. Heck, I don't know for sure if I'd like it but I am 99 percent sure I would because I like hot and spicy food, especially Tex-Mex.

For authentic Mexcican food in East El Paso, try the Eastside Cafe (open for breakfast and lunch), located on Rojas at Lee Trevino or Gil's on George Dieter at Vista del Sol. Good food and great service at both places.

However, if you can find 'em in EP too...wow, that just adds another incredible option to the EP cuisine options!
As for Poncho's, there is one up in ABQ still but it is pretty bad. I have heard that the one in El Paso was quite a bit better than the one still standing in ABQ.

When I got back from Kuwait, and was out of the Army, it was the very first place we went too. I ate like 6 plates full of food.. I could not do that now. But it was Americanized Mexican food.. not much bite to it, but man it was darn good. I loved having Sopapillas after dinner, they made them fresh right there. So they were warm and ready for honey.
Lindas on Hondo Pass road, used to be LEO's Mexican food is quite good, have not been there in a while. LEO's was always a family favorite place to eat.. They are no longer in the N.E. and I have only seen the one out on Mesa Street.
The Mexican place on the corner of Dyer and McCombs, used to be Hobo Joes and later Ranchers grill, is a pretty good Mexican food place Now. LA Dona Cafe on Trans-Mountain is a good little eat in place.. they have great Mexican breakfast.
Humm are there any Mexican Buffet places left in El Paso?
Las Cruces used to have the best burger place in the world called Henry J's. Fudruckers sorta follows it business model.

Have to ask - just how hot do you think I would find EP/LC after having spent all of my adult life in Las Vegas, NV? And, while on the subject of food, any recommendations on where to get a good tamale or menudo? Also, seafood - raw oysters? We're currently traveling in South Carolina (in the Charleston area) and I love it here. But my husband wants to check out Las Cruces before we decide where to settle. We'll be coming that way the middle of January.

I would settle in Charleston.. that is a very beautiful place.
I think the first thing you would notice is the lack of 24 hour business in El Paso. Vegas never sleeps, El Paso on the other hand does.
Vegas desert and El Paso desert are totally different. Culture will be the biggest factor and change you'll have to get used to. Raw Oysters.. I dont know of any place to get them in El Paso or Las Cruces.
The best Tamales would be from a good neighbor. There is a lady my aunt knows known as Mama Rosa. She is like 78 years old and makes the best Tamales.
But I also like the ones you can get at Albertson's in the special food section near the cheese and frozen stuff.
Good luck on your search.. hope you find a place you both enjoy.

It's a beautiful victorian era hotel on the exterior, but I've always been kind of "meh" when it came to the interior. I little too much 80s cheeze. Not no more. The decor is much more period appropriate and looks beautiful. Make a trip out there if you can..

Holmes,
Cloudcroft has no airport, so I hop in my plane, and it is a 30 min. flight to the Timberon Airport. Taxi to the west end of the strip, park off the runway, tie down, and walk 250 yards to the Lodge for a great meal with people that have a few brain cells. No traffic jams, no Border Patrol checkpoints treating me as if I were an illegal, no drunks on the road to dodge, just a wonderful flight up and back. Brie
