MountainStar bringing USL soccer to El Paso, has plans for Downtown stadium | Local News | elpasoinc.com

The Patriots folded several years ago and now it looks like MountainStar is bringing in a USL team. Thoughts?

I’d have my concerns if it was any other ownership group. How many teams have come and gone from the Coliseum? Mountainstar knows what they are doing.

How many teams playing at the coliseum were comparable to triple A baseball?

My point was not the venue or level of play but faith in the ownership group.

The ownership group has the luxury of having a triple a franchise and playing in a brand new facility. Did any of the other teams you're referring to have any of those?

You are asking questions you already know the answers to. You created a thread and asked for thoughts. I gave mine. I have confidence in Mountainstar. I think this will be successful because they seem to know how to get El Paso to buy tickets. A nice stadium is one of the reasons why.

You have confidence in MountainStar? Unlike other teams, they have used tax payer money, already asked for more, and want a new stadium for this team. While the other groups who have played in the Coliseum have done so on their own and have cheaper concessions.

The Rhinos have been around for a while and the Patriots were around for 20 years. MountainStar is only successful because they have Triple A baseball and a new stadium. If MountainStar brought Single A to Cohen, you would be singing a different tune.

Not sure where this confidence comes from.

The stadium for baseball is losing money every year and taxpayers that didn't get to vote for it are paying for it. A soccer stadium will be the same.

Where are those other teams now?

My point was quite a few teams have come and gone from the Coliseum. You replied about tax money and stadiums. That doesn't discount my point. Mountainstar is doing something right and those teams didn't. Of course, I would rather they did not use tax money. That is the nature of the beast though. That is also what keeps SUP from turning into Cohen. Money. It is not like we are doing things in El Paso different than other cities in similar situations (regarding AAA and USL).

I do agree with you about the concessions. The prices are ridiculous. Cinemark looks reasonable by comparison.

I disagree.

The established level was Double A. Why would anyone bring Single A to El Paso and expect better results? We saw what happened with independent baseball. I understand your agenda and your style of dialogue but that was a very silly statement.
