I'm going to start working on getting my license soon and I have a question. I don't want to wait until the next club meeting up here in Illinois to find out. If I got my license here in Illinois, would I have to retest in Texas? I know the call signs have the state encoded in them (or I think they do).

I'm hoping to move to Texas in the next year or so. Being out in the great open spaces of West Texas is a perfect fit for amateur radio and I have a few friends I could stay in touch with to boot.

Any good radio clubs in the El Paso area?

Smile El Paso Amatuer Radio Activity

Hey Mr. Bones,

If you get your license anywhere in the U.S. you do not have to retest ever unless you want to upgrade to the next class of license.

El Paso has many amateur radio activities.

There are 3 clubs and many club-owned and private repeaters in the area.
Many of the private repeaters are open to all amateurs. Some are closed, but may welcome new operators. You'd have to check with each repeater trustee to make sure.

Here are some links to El Paso area amateur radio clubs, etc.

Welcome to the El Paso area !

These are just seome of the links for Amateur radio in the El Paso, Texas area.
Do a google search for "Amateur Radio El Paso Texas" for more links.

Also, the ARRL is one good source of info;

Once you make it to El Paso, give me a shout on the 147.36 repeater (+ shift, 162.2 PL)
