I'm going camping in a few days up in northern New Mexico and I need to buy some anti-bear mace. If I'm not mistaken, bear mace is much more potent than regular self-defense mace and therefore harder to find. I've tried Academy and a few gun shops but no luck. I'm sure I can find it at REI in ABQ but I'd rather have it in my pack right away. Any suggestions or even advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pepper spray is what you want, I think. I buy it at ACE HARDWARE stores for use against dogs that chase after me on my bike. Mace never worked as well for me, or tear gas for that matter.

Something else you might consider - an air horn! Forest service personnel are issued the aerosol cans with horn attached to scare off bears in the area where they are clearing trees or repairing trails. This is the same product that is sold to boating enthusiasts as a warning horn on the water. CAVEAT: Need to have ear plugs handy since these horns are REALLY LOUD and can damage hearing.

Additional use - for those who might need to be found when they are lost - to let searchers know where they are. Far outweigh whistles and other such mouth devices.

I will definitely be carrying a horn, but I need a back-up that will stop the bear in case it decides to charge for whatever reason. I've heard from several sources that some bears (which are very intelligent) have begun to associate warning horns, gun shots, etc. with humans (and thus food) and may actually run TOWARDS those noises. Scary stuff to be sure. Plus, I'm not a gun owner (yet).
