Back in 1988 I had a coroporate America job....made a whole heck of a lot of money...made twice as much as my husband....decided I wanted to stay home with my little girl.....quit my job with no advance warning....
So...I tell everyone that we were so poor that if the Mac and Cheese box said 5, 1/2 cup servings....you got a 1/2 cup serving and two servings were left for the next meal...but we made it.....we made enough money to pay our bill and buy food ...three days a week ...not meat....but we always were able to pay our bills....

When my ex and I broke up (1986), I was left with pretty much a few bucks in my pocket and a couple changed of clothes. I managed to find a place to stay with a couple guys in a roach infested craphole on Lawson Street (northeast). I lived off of bologna sandwiches and Ramen noodles for several months, until I finally found a "decent" job.

People in that apt. complex used to do all sorts of nice things, like pour sand in the clothes washer, and a neighbor of mine attacked me with a knife and sliced my arm wide open for saying "Hello". Not kidding. It wasn't a very good neighborhood.

LEVOW...you want to talk about being poor...
We were so poor that.....
after a rainy day our neighborhood rainbow was in Black & White..
our microwave doubled as a TV...with cooking shows all the time...
we couldn't afford to window shop.....
I went to school every other day, when it was my turn to wear shoes....
we qualified for food stamps but the gov't program was none existing....
a family day out was to collect cans.....
and if you want to see my neighborhood, you have to travel back in time
because the neighborhood no longer exists. It was torn down because it
was an embarrasement to El Paso. Hey, but we were always telling jokes....laughing keeps you from thinking about food.
