I dont think it will have the same high profile as the current hospital. But then I maybe wrong.

Here is the bed capacity and size WBAMC has..

Quote:
William Beaumont Army Medical Center has a capacity of 600 beds; employs 1,500 military and 700 civilian personnel; and serves all of West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and part of southern California. It has one of only two trauma units in the El Paso area.
If I recall the General said this new Medical Center will have a 500 bed Capacity. There are three rumors I have heard floating about..

1:WBAMC will remain and be retro fitted to today's medical standards as it is now outdated.. After the new hospital is built.. that way military personel are not with out a medical care facility. That would mean with both Mecial centers you would have 1100 beds.

2:WBAMC will become the VA Hospital.. the Largest in the region.

3:It will be either a: sold to a private hospital firm.. giving N.E. Central a hospital.. or B: traded with the city.

I know that WBAMC wont sit empty. But as for the size of the new Hospital.. I can only guess... as I have not seen any plans for it yet.

That would be great for Northeast if they made that ''our'' hospital out there. All we need then is a large mall out on the Patriot and McCombs.

I agree.. if I had the money or the way to get the funding I would build My Mall idea out there. The one I talked about in my mall idea thread. I think it would be supported, as it combines the idea of the LIVING CENTER, and box mall into a new idea with green space, shopping, covered parking. I would surround the mall with Brownstones.

I am betting on the VA getting it though... as there is a growing need with the many vets coming home from the WAR zones that are going to need a care facility as large as that to accommodate them.

This is awesome, its good to hear about the new Ft. Bliss hospital moving forward. I hope the VA takes over WBAMC.

We have a grandson that was injured in Afghanistan by a mine and is going to the hospital at Fort Bliss. Is that hospital better than Walter Reed? Is there accomadations for family members when they come to see their solider or do they have to get rooms elsewhere? if anyone can help me out, sure would appreciate it. Thanks

I am so sorry to hear about your grandson. I cannot offer much information on accommodations as we are not military. I can offer a "little" info that may be of use. My husband worked at WRAMC in the late 90's and mentioned that unlike WBAMC it was not at the time (1996) a level 2 trauma center. Although, WR is widely known doesn't necessarily make it the best (its had its issues in the past). That hugely depends on the physicians and nurses and their training. Since it is the military that training varies since they are continually being rotated in and out as well as having civilian contractors. I have a lot of respect for the military medical personnel they do the best with what they are given. I wish you and your family the best in the future.
