wow, zombie thread. I wonder what qualifies a bar to be a "dive."

Well if you are willing to take a short drive on Highway 28 in southern New Mexico, Chope's is good and the Mezkin food next door is fantastic. El Patio in Old Mesilla is another decent "dive" bar.

Anyone remember years ago a bar near the outskirts (hwy 54 probably) that had a sign saying " Drinking contest every Friday night"? I don't think that would go over well today.

I keep passing by Chopes, but never stop in, because I'm usually by myself. Someday . . .

THis place is MY favorite!!! Problem is that you better get there when the dining room opens at 5:30 , otherwise , you have to wait. That food is fantastic.

The bar is something else. The mens room used to have a trough for a urinal made out of cement with not much modesty. LOL Like something in a third world country. The bar, itself, is like the Star Wars bar scene. Really neat.

Watch out for "dive" bars in EP. They are extremely dangerous places to be with the lax gun laws in Texas and people getting drunk.
Had a cousin who was shot in one of those dive bars right across the street from the city bus terminal. Just someone getting angry and going back to their car to get a gun.
Like what happened in that "classy" bar in that new part of EP with all of the slick night clubs.

You are all over the place in your post. First, I am very sorry to hear that your cousin was shot. That is horrible. Even with all he recent headlines, I have yet to hear about anyone not in a dispute or argument being shot. What were the circumstances with your cousin? Second, what classy bar are you talking about? What part of El Paso is new?

Binks, don't you watch ANY news? I don't even live in EP and I was able to read about the very recent shootings in EP off of the Internet.
