I am honestly not offended by what anyone has said...I am mearly stating that not ALL soldiers/military families are alike. I am not going to argue that some soldiers can get irately stupid, just like any other person. Just like not all military wives seek the company of others when there significant others are deployed. Personally I have been thru 4 deployments in my marriage and I know how hard it can be, but we are all different. I focus more on my family during these difficult times, but I am also a SAHM that homescools both of my children. As far as ADA moving and so forth honeslty with anyone who has ever been with the military, who knows lol, I have heard that ADA will be the ones staying and they are moving CAV out, but as usual things with the military until they put it in orders nothing is positive. I take it in stride but honeslty it is nerveracking (for lack of a better word) to be classified to be a certain way just because of your spouses chosen career. I think all the businesses will have a positive economic surge but again who knows anything for sure. They (being most people in EL Paso) might not want us there but hopefully they will realize we don't have a choice in the matter and are coming wether they or we like it or not. If El paso can't hold the influx of soldiers it is not our fault. The City council needs to get with the Dept of Defense and do something about it.(but I am not gonna hold my breath on it)

Muhnay- Greatest luck to you on your job away from the military if you take the job in Victoria it is a really nice area, and Thank you for your service and sacrifice over the years.

I know I come off as an *******. And I maybe.. but I mean well. I tell you that the CAV is not wanted just to help prepair you for the attitudes you may face.

but this Post is undergoing some major changes, and by 2011 I am sure it will be upto other post standerds, if not above them, lots of eyes are on El Paso and Fort Bliss, and the all to common Fort Bliss way is leaving and becoming more Army way.. including the politics of it all.

If you need any pictures of the Post and the area, let me know.. I will make sure to get them for you.

there is no guest housing here, so be ready for that. You will have to stay with the Inn, or find off post housing pretty quick, seems housing is hard to come by.. they are slated to tear most of the old stuff down, to restructer the base err post.

The rayes site states that 60K people will come to the area, at the same time provinding 23K more jobs on and off post. Were will the 40K left work? The City needs more schools, and needs more structure to support the influx of people. I think in the long run it will help change the city for the better, but not before it crushes it like a 10 ton rock. Its gonna get worse before it gets better.

El Paso is a pretty big military retirement city, and you will always be able to find a welcomed face here.

I dont mean to lump everyone into one catagory.. I am only speaking of what I see on a weekly basis.. So if I give that impression, I apologize.

I have no idea what rank your service member is.. but if its E4 or below, stay out of the Van Horn Housing area. Its referred to as Van Harlem for a reason. We have also had a rise in on post Gangs.. So watch your older children and know who they maybe hanging with. We are also very strict on Drunk Driving, and Cell phone useage while driving on post.. I warn you so you will be ready when you get here.

If your family can get onto Biggs and the new housing there, do it, it is very nice. Besides Biggs is less crime active, unless you live in the north forty, where the trailers are that house the single soldiers.. And they are building a lot of new stuff on Biggs. Main Post ( Bliss ) and Biggs will be connected by 2 bridges, so you never have to leave post to travel between the two.

Thank you, I am not sure if I will move to Victoria yet.. I have a another oppertunity in Oregon to consider first. I think I wat out of Law Enforcement.. its hard on me. back problems, and the mental game is rough.. I respect the people who do it day in and day out for 20+ years. I am just getting tired of seeing the worst of people... or scraping dead kids off the roads who drink and drive. No need to thank me, I gladly do it, and would do so again given the chance. Thank you and your family for serving.. and agin best of luck on your deployment to Fort Bliss.

Here is a off topic question. I was reading a post on how to stay away from certain areas in NE. A friend of mine is renting a house on Northampton is this in a bad area?

Harry this is more info on the BRAC and the Troops.. What I had in the link I left ya.. you had asked when and how many.. this gives a good idea.

Congressman Reyes' weekly column: "BRAC: New Troops to Revitalize Fort Bliss and El Paso"

“BRAC is a four letter word,” so said the resident of a city where the local military base was slated for closure. BRAC, which is of course an acronym rather than a word, stands for Base Realignment and Closure, and for some communities the 2005 BRAC closure list did indeed bring bad news.

For El Paso, BRAC represents prosperity and growth.

When I was elected to office in 1996, Fort Bliss had just recently lost the 4,400 person 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, and the post’s future did not seem bright. Working with El Paso’s far-sighted military and civilian leaders, we crafted a plan that turned Fort Bliss from a potential loser in the next BRAC round to one of this year’s biggest winner.

We focused on the under-appreciated strengths of Fort Bliss. While Fort Bliss on its own is an impressive post, when considered with White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base, the region represents an unmatched military asset. By working together as a region with leaders from White Sands and Holloman, we effectively showcased the area to national leaders.

We dispelled the myth that El Paso does not have enough water to support military and civilian households. The El Paso Water Utilities developed a long-term plan, including the construction of a desalination plant, which we helped bring to fruition with federal dollars. When some at the Department of Defense wanted to restrict training areas on Fort Bliss, we passed legislation to ensure troops could continue to use the land in the same manner as the air defenders and cavalry before them. With the training lands secure long before the BRAC process commenced, we were able to demonstrate to the Army and Department of Defense that our post could easily handle the location and training of a large influx of soldiers.

Due to BRAC, Fort Bliss will grow by 11,500 troops, making it the largest gainer in military personnel, and the Army has announced that they will move additional troops to Fort Bliss over the next several years as we close bases in Germany. In the end, Fort Bliss is expected to grow by over 20,000 new troops, which means about 60,000 soldiers and family members in all. These troops and their families will have a huge positive impact on our community. New jobs will be created to support these new families, and it is estimated that the potential boost to our economy is over $4 billion annually.

This great win for El Paso did not come about as the result of a single action or a single person; rather it was the collective efforts of many people that brought about this unprecedented win for our community.

Now that we have achieved our goal with the BRAC recommendation, our next challenge is to prepare our community for this growth. We must improve our schools for all students. We must build the roads that will allow prosperity to flow through all El Paso. We must build homes to match our growing needs.

And we must ensure that growth at Fort Bliss translates to growth and improvement in the lives of all El Pasoans. We all worked hard to secure this important win for our region, and we should all share in the benefits

North Hampton, I have never heard of it. If its way out North East what we call North Hills, then thats an awesome area to live. I would recommned it.. if you look at google maps and see a small triangle between Hondo Pass, Dyer and the freeway called del norte achres.. Thats the Devils triangle, stay away from there.

El Paso, is not really set up in named neiborhoods, like you see in other places.. if it is.. I am outta the loop.

I'm not going to apologize either, for getting offended. That's great you served our country, you deserve a thank you for your service as well. How I took your statement was who cares about the military, I could care less...and so yes I did get offended by that. It's hard to read the tone over the Internet, as I'm sure you know.

Plus, to be honest, I understand how much you hate EL Paso, but really, for some of us we have no choice in the matter, so we're going to make the best of it. I get tired of hearing how horrible EP is, post after post, so I guess this post just did it for me. The military is supposedly hated in Hawaii, and all you tell me about EP and the locals hating the military is the same situation in Hawaii. It's always made out to be worse than it really is. It doesn't matter to me, as we're going there, regardless if 60,000 or 600 others will be going too.

Just to add, I never called you any names, so I would appreciate you keeping your "total ass" comments to yourself. As I already mentioned, your tone def sounded like who gives a sh** about the military, so understandably, I took real offense to that, HENCE my "total assness".

I for one dont care either way.. Maybe you'll all help make my nights less boring. Well that is short term anyways.. as I am out of here soon.
Please don't speak for everyone in this city.

There may be some people that don't want the soldiers to come, but I haven't spoken to one person yet who isn't excited about more troops coming to our base. Yes, most people are mainly happy because the extra military personal will equal more business (more jobs) and more money in the long run to the economy. I for one am extremely proud that we have Fort Bliss here and I have plenty of soldier friends too, our troops that are stationed here mainly come from other cities and parts of the country and they add so much to this city.. Ft Bliss is huge part of our town. I am thankful to all of you who are serving in the military or who have served in it.

Muhnay, I am thankful you served and fought for our country, but please can you stop being so bitter about El Paso? I too have family who fought for our country and they are from here too, they just don't seem so bitter as you do.

Hey, FB1977, I posted this for you in another thread, but I also thought I would copy and paste it here in case you didn't see the other thread to bolster your move -

I am a total gringo, I am originally from the Midwest (for 27 years), am just an average joe (married with a couple of young kids, middle-income job, college degree) who lives in Albuquerque but has visited El Paso approximately 20+ times for family, spending literrally months there. (I am not military so I cannot put myself into your shoes there, but of course a hearty thanks from all true Americans for your service). The reason I tell you all of this is that not all people despise El Paso like most posting in this forum do. It is their right and perogative, and indeed El Paso, like all places, does have its bad sides.

However, I personally really enjoy El Paso. I love the weather and sunshine, I enjoy the scenery with the mountains and the palm trees, the people are pretty darn friendly, the pace of life is rather relaxed and laid back, if you like Mexican food you'll be in heaven there, the cost of housing is some of the cheapest in the nation, the crime rate is lower than places like Albuquerque and cities I am used to from the Midwest, there is no personal income tax, etc.

While I understand others here are anti-EP and that is their perogative, I know of plenty of folks like myself of various ethnicities who highly enjoy El Paso. I think you'll end up being surprised on how much you may like it!
