However, your statement's probably true of kids that go to public school. If they're smart and ambitious and come from a modest-income family, their only choice is to leave. Sucks for them, their families AND El Paso.

They're likely to leave anyway, being young and restless; I know a guy who graduated Americas High several years ago who went to the other side of the state to go to college. He could have just as easily have gone to UTEP.

But, if you want to go to a local university, you can either go to UTEP or burn up a lot of expensive gas and pay out-of-state tuition going to NMSU (if you don't want to move to Las Cruces or brave the violence in Juarez).

El Paso doesn't have a law school; the medical school's just getting started(does it include a school of dentistry or pharmacy? I don't think it includes a school of veterinary medicine). There's not much of a tech industry. Et cetera. Quite a bit of incentive to leave town.

NMSU offers in-state tuition to El Paso students and it's cheaper than UTEP - about $2700 vs approx $3400. You can get a great education at either NMSU or UTEP without going tens of thou$ands into debt.

Oh, okay. I used to commute 30 miles to work, and 65 miles to college, though, and it was tiresome and expensive. If you don't want to drive all the way from El Paso to class in Las Cruces and back, you can move there, I guess.

But they leave for distant colleges anyway.

Default Safety inspection?

Been doing my research as I may be moving to El Paso and I have to say this has really surprised me. Coming from the upper Midwest we have no such thing as a "safety inspection" sounds like such a waste. Doesn't seem to be very 'Texan'..... At least in the general sense that Texas is perceived by a non-Texan.

Anyone know if this 'safety inspection' applies to motorcycles?

On further thought, I suppose you have to make up the funds somewhere from not having a state income tax.

yes, the inspection applies to all Motor vehicles registered in Texas. It's not a big deal really, it just makes sure your vehicle is operating safely and environmentally soundly.

I think quite a few people from El Paso go to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, which is kind of far away to commute to day classes and doesn't have an extension campus in El Paso but may have online classes that you can take. The same is true for Western New Mexico University in Silver City (which does have an extension campus in Deming).

This thread has been stickied, so I didn't exactly perform necromancy on it. Does what Gary Siete said about NMSU tuition for El Paso residents still hold true?

As I recall, Alpine and Silver City are both about a 3 or 3 1/2-hour drive from El Paso and Deming is nearly 2 hours, plus the WNMU-Deming degree offerings are a bit limited.

COST OF LIVING
El Paso's low cost of living compares very favorably with other major cities. On average, El Pasoans pay 94% of the national average for all items.
Compared to other U.S. cities, El Paso's cost of living is low:
San Diego, CA
127.5
Santa Fe, NM
114.5
Denver, CO 108.6

Las Vegas, NV
107.0
Albuquerque, NM 102.8

Phoenix, AZ
100.8
Tuscon, AZ 98.1

EL PASO, TX
94.6

Can someone tell me where this info was obtained? I would like to see the ranking of other cities, thank you.

Hey, I recently read an El Paso Times article that said the water was being shut off to a bunch of people in Far Northeast temporarily so repairs could be done on the system. I recognized most of the streets listed (the area in question was around the upper end of Dyer from about the Van Horne Apartments in the 11600 block north to the state line), but not one: Lynn Field Road.

Would somebody tell me where that street is? I haven't been able to find it on Google Maps.
