Surprised you haven't discovered the rather large German population at Ft Bliss. They are here (with dependents) for training. It is weird to go to COSTCO and hear a non-English, non-Spanish language. They have the annual Oktoberfest every year which is a pretty big deal.

Oh...glad to hear you are enjoying ELP. You will see so much negativity on here about ELP, some from me also. I am not completely down on ELP, perhaps transitioning slower than some. I went on Transmountain recently and actually stopped at one of the vista points and enjoyed the view and how green the mountains are. So, not all bad, but slow in appreciation.

I would agree with Caltep. There's a surprisingly large German population here because of German soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss and elements of the German Air Force that were stationed at Alamogordo, NM.

There's just a lot of Germans in Texas period. Hell Cattleman's Steakhouse out in Fabens was created and I believe owned by Germans.

You know, UTEP even has a program designed for the dependents of the German soldiers to help them prepare for acceptance to University back home.

The German population is depleting though.. Fort Sill is getting them, since we are loosing the Air Defense School that employed most of the Germans in El Paso.

Yes -- I used to see more Germans but not lately. There are a few who decided they like the region especially the weather and stayed on.

You almost never hear German spoken here. The Germans I know who are permanent speak excellent English.

As already noted, there is a large German population in Alamogordo, which is a nice drive from El Paso. There is a German school there as well. Not sure if there is one in El Paso.
