It's because Albuquerque has some kind of filming deal going on or something like that. Not to mention there are a few film schools up there. But that's probably the reason why in the movie No Country For Old Men, they shot the El Paso part in Albuquerque. I mean hell they were in Sanderson, TX they could've come out west and hit EP haha.

Albuquerque has a movie studio with two more in the planning stages. There have been several movies shot in and around Albuquerque & New Mexico in the last few years, including several TV series.

That's interesting. I just saw that movie over the weekend and I remember the motel sign that mentioned EP. Since I've only been to the airports in those cities, I wouldn't have known the difference. I suppose that's what the producers were counting on.

Why would they do that? Why not just film El Paso scenes here? What's the point in faking it somewhere else?

Agreed. Especially considering all the recent movies that filmed at least some of their footage here.

There are subsidies available in New Mexico which Texas doesn't have that saved the producers big bucks. The article below describes how New Mexico has one of the most aggressive subsidy programs in the country and mentions "No Country..." and "Terminator: Salvation" as its big successes.
