I left El Paso for work after coming there for work and I have no regrets. I think the problem with the city is that the leaders didn't really care for the city until the Army decided to move a lot of people there from Germany and all over. I live back in Arizona and missed it so much when I was in El P but I can't say that I didn't have fun while i was there with the car clubs and such but I El Paso is away from the rest of the world and I was ready to leave the day I got there.

we left el paso to go live in slc ut back in 1994. it was mostly to start a new life & work related, i miss el paso people, humble & so friendly!!!!!!!! i still love el paso & visit often, utah is so conservative & the people are not as friendly! and it's so cold most of the year...... plus all the family & the good mexican food!!!!! maybe one day i'll go back, when i'm older , and ready to retire. my husband says it's a retirement town....

That being said, finding a general dentist to move to El Paso to set up shop is hard to do as well.

I got my professional designation and set up my business in El Paso. And as soon as we were making enough money to bolt, we did. To say I don't regret it is silly because that's to say I even have to think about it. The difference in opportunities for my 7 year old between Manhattan and El Paso aren't even worth mentioning because it's not even a similar game. I mean, the difference between what my daughter gets to be a part of compared to what I was a part of growing up in EP is genuinely ridiculous.
I suppose - but I myself would think it would be more difficult to raise children in Manhattan than here.

I think in El Paso there's a lot to do for young kids but it's not all the cultural stuff - but here they can swim, play sports, ride bikes, hike, ride horses, camping up in the nearby mountains. There are things we have that Manhattan doesn't have or that wouldn't be very affordable.

That can be a good thing too. We're isolated - for good and bad here.

We haven't left yet but we got orders. We are going to go back to Germany early next summer. I can't tell you how much we will miss EP.

In the 17 years that I have been married to my Husband (he has 25 yrs active duty) we both agreed that this is the most beautiful place that we could possibly want to, not only finish raising our younger children ( the culture here is beautiful beyond words) but to settle down and plant our roots as well. From the day that we first drove into EP we have been in love with this city, it's history and it's people.

We have lived all over the world ( him more than me) and it breaks our hearts to leave. I just wanted the locals that post here to know that no matter where we go and no matter how far we are away....EP will always have a special place in our hearts and that we will wish to come here---home. It is our home. Thank you.

Thank you for that post. I realize not everyone will fall in love with El Paso but the above post represents what can happen if you come in with an open mind.

You could really like it if you like sun almost every day - it's great for hiking here. You could live between the West Side and the Valley and find a pretty good variety of hiking places, you can hike across the mountain one day, along the river the next, the irrigation canals are great - you can go all over the place. When you need more change of scenery, a quick drive to Cloudcroft and you can hike in aspen and pine forests, snow in the winter.

If you like long walks in the summer then do it in the morning or evening. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun. On the west-side your options are walking through subdivisions or the scenic/green Upper Valley. There are health clubs on Mesa including a Y at Mesa/Resler but most clubs are drive-to-exercise. EP really is a suburban car-oriented lifestyle. You might also consider the UTEP/Kern Place area to find more amenities within walking distance & more diverse walking-route options.
