On their knees? That does not sound like fun.

Why not just go climb the Franklin Mountains? They're higher, have many nice hiking trails and there is no problem with safety.

its not the hike itself but other religious factors as well. On the other hand I have been wanting to climb the Franklins I just don't have anyone who is willing to do it/go with me.

Cristo Rey is located in SUnland Park NEw MExico. IT is the big white statue of Jesus on the mountain that can be seen for miles around..I am unusre which exit to take from I 10...I usually get there by Paisano Avenue. The walk tomorrow starts at noon and a 5 dollar donation is requested. I still am unsure if I will go or not!

Well, as someone else pointed out, it's a religious thing. Some people who are ill, or those that know someone that are ill will pray and make a solemn promise to walk on their knees a penance if the ill person gets well. 'Sort of a deal.

I am not knocking it, faith is very important to many of us, some are so faithful as to do this.

Oh yea I remember doing that as a kid while visiting Mexico. My mom and grandmother made us walk on our knees for a block...our knee's got scrapped, and cut up.

There are other easier, scripturally correct ways to receive penence...but that is a topic on another thread.

I knew someone whose German immigrant father made them kneel on a broomstick handle for hours. Some of that would amount to child abuse in our culture.
