I got the word about a week ago that I'll be moving to El Paso in five to six months so I wanted to join the forum and introduce myself. My name is Kyle, I'm a new Judge Advocate in the Army, and I suppose I'm part of the expansion of Fort Bliss.

I'm a native Texan and have literally lived all over the state; grew up in DFW, currently live in Orange (my wife's hometown which is about 850 miles east on I-10), spent three years living in Lubbock for law school, and even spent a summer living and working down in Harlingen. Obviously El Paso is different from any of those locales, so me and my wife are excited to be moving somewhere new and different. I'm also happy to be moving back to West Texas to escape the humidity and mosquitoes which are literally oppresive in Southeast Texas.

Me and my wife are both white, and while we only know a smattering of Spanish, I'm actually thrilled to be moving somewhere that might actually force us to become bilingual. I'm sure we could get by just knowing English, but I'd love to become fluent in something else and since she wants to work in the medical field, she'll probably need to know at least a little.

I have a few months of training to do in Virginia followed by a stop at Fort Sill OK, so we won't be moving to El Paso till this summer, but I have a few questions I'll throw out for you guys:

1. Real Estate. Where should I be looking to live in the city? I know we don't want to live way out in Horizon, and we would prefer an older established neighborhood in town. How far would 150k get me in a place like Kern or Manhattan Heights? Are there any other neat older neighborhoods in town I should look at? We wouldn't be opposed to living in a five to ten year old development on the east side either, we just don't want to buy a new house in a new neighborhood and have to deal with all the construction. We also love the Southwestern/Santa Fe style homes which seem to fit the region much better than the traditional ranch-style homes which remind me too much of those in DFW.

2. Is anyone familiar with the FastTrack program at UTEP's Nursing school? My wife would ultimately like to go to medical school is she can get into it, but from reading around the forum it seems like a non-Spanish speaking person would have a much easier time finding a job in the medical field if they were a RN. If this is the case, I think she would be best off spending a year getting her BSN and finding a job as a nurse if she doesn't wind up getting into med school.

3. Schools. While we don't have kids, I'd like to live in a decent school district so that we'll have an easy time selling our house if and when the Army decides to uproot me. I'm also a pretty big high school football fan so I'd love to catch some games out there as well.

I think I've rambled for long enough. We're excited to be moving to El Paso and are actually flying into town in a few weeks on our way up to Ruidoso for a weekend ski trip with my inlaws. Hopefully we can free up a bit of time and drive around the city which I haven't spent much time in since I was much much younger. I look forward to talking to y'all and I'm proud to be the newest gringo transplant.

If you've lived in Harlingen, El Paso is similar in many respects, but with mountains. Culturally it is very similar. Think Chicos.
