Uhm No they wont. There was a meeting, and at one point the plan was to build enough housing and even Apartments on post to house 90% of all soldiers stationed here, that required housing. But a deal with the city has them cutting that percentage a bunch. But you never know they may build more houses on post if greedy landlords continue to try and get over on the military. There is a house on the corner here that only rents to military, the guy by law has to disclose it is in a flood zone and never does. But he gets away with it because he only rents to military and they are gone soon after they loose all their belongings to yet another flood on this street.

6 foot 3 do you remember the K-Mart up by McKelligon Canyon? That whole area is a brand new Apt. complex. And there are many others going up all over.

I think Southern has a valid view point, she has been here as a new resident of not only El Paso, but as a Military Spouse of Fort Bliss. I would pick her brain on what she thinks of El Paso and Fort Bliss. She would have a better perspective than us locals. When your local, you get blinders... it like living in a house with a cat, and your friend comes over after not being there for years. He smells it, where you don't, you come accustom to it. Same can be said with El Paso and being local.

we don't want to live on post ~ we are planning on buying :0) If the BAH rates on the Governments website are correct, and with our base pay ~ we can more than afford it.

i also just saw that the BAH rates I was quoting was for 2008 ~ the new rate for 2009 would be 1017, so $37 less, but not too bad.

Some do. A growing trend I have been seeing though is Rent to owns. With the economy in the state it is, not many can get a loan. You do get far more house for your money here.. but what will you do with it after you leave? Rent it, try to sell it?

thanks for the info. Well we are not necessarily wanting to leave. DH retires in 5 years or so, and the only reason I could see for us leaving (at this point, its too early obviuoslly to know for sure) would be if we couldn't work it out to stay financially. Which could definately be a possibility if the job market is still yucky.

** edited to add that I was born and raised for the first half of my life in Alamogordo New Mexico, and have family and friends there, which is why we're considering staying in El Paso ** but ofcourse that is too far ahead to say for sure one way or another

Mrsrobinson.....did you know that NMDOT widened U.S. 54 from 2 lanes to 4 lanes from El Paso to Alamogordo in early 2000's.

Cloudcroft and Ruidoso are just so beautiful over here.

I also saw the new under construction apts on McCombs and Railroad back in august as it's good to see all the new construction of them in northeast EP.

Mrs Robinson, if your husband hasnt been assigned a sponsor, have him write a letter to the Commander or 1SG asking some of these questions, stating your plans and depending your husband's MOS, state his experience, education and type of assignment he would like, it helps. Read the El Paso Times on-line to get a feel for the city and check the real estate section or go-online with real estate firms. We got our dream home by looking on-line.
