Cal, we would not be isolationist. The Mexicans cringe at the thought of US military intervention and many are still angry over the lost of Mexican lands, southwest and west US. For all the good intentions, by introducing troops, that would be a major shot in the foot, politically. If there are any military advisors, I am sure they would not be identified as such and would keep their status low key. More likely there are civilan law advisors, and course you see the aid and military equipment being sent. It would be just as damaging if we were to enter Canada.

For all the rumors going around about US troops being in Mexico, I wouldnt put much stock in the rumors. If they were there in any real numbers you woukld have had confirmation by now. Some people just love conspiracies. The only U.S. military you will see or hear about will be those assigned to the Embassy with the Attaches.

But if you look into our recent involvement history, the US does jump in when "our interests and national security" are at stake. Whether the threat of communism, fascism, terrorism, WMD-ism and maybe now narco-terrorism, someone finds a reason to justify the use of US military resources. I agree the intervention of the US in either of our border neighbors brings issues that will be difficult to justify and in the case of Mexico, would give veracity to the image of a collapsing government. Given our current military condition around the world, I cannot see this happening either nor do I believe our new president would allow it.

I think of Clancy's book "Clear and Present Danger"...a President unilaterally sending troops covertly to South America on a drug war revenge mission. Not that we are looking at that here, but if you like conspiracy theory...it's an interesting comparison.

Cal, there have been only two actual cases of covert insertion that I have direct knownledge of and even with those, the story got out within months. So, I just cant imagine a commando team floating around Mexico and no one knowing. Any Spec OPS in Mexico would be doing overt training with everybody's knownledge. Sould Mexico ever collaspe, I would imagine the borders being sealed by the military and the OAS doing the intervention. Anyway, just I mentioned to USMC before. There are many countries that operate quite well in their self-inflicted chaos and I suspect Mexico will always be Mexico just as Chicago politics will always be Chicago politics.

Yes, but as big brother to the world, it's hard for the US to stay out of anything...check Yugoslavia, Somalia, Haiti, Panama, Cuba etc.

Anyway, that's my piece (or peace)

Great points by both of you, my two cents.
