We got the job in El Paso!
I have been browsing this board while we were waiting to hear on the status of my husband's promotion and subsequential transfer to El Paso, TX. We found out this morning it's all official and we will be expected to move there by the end of the summer. Hubby starts April 27th and will be renting an RV spot until he finds us a house to rent. My boys and I will stay behind getting our current home ready for renters and finishing their semester of school.
I guess I'm getting ahead of myself...We are a family of 5; 2 teenage boys, a toddler and two parents. I am currently a Loss Prevention/Safety Services Supervisor for a call center here in Rio Rancho, NM (I am sure gonna miss my co-workers!).
My teenage boys are very pickey about the school they will be attending and are quite dissappointed that they will be moving before the new high school opens here in Rio Rancho. I have one son interested in attending some kind of Science charter school there and the other son wants to go to a cyber academy.
My toddler is a four year old mama's boy. His current preschool has been awesome and he will miss his friends and teachers greatly.
Growing up in Carlsbad, NM and Las Cruces, NM; I have always heard scarry stories about El Paso, TX. But then again, my mom cried when I moved to Albuquerque, NM saying that big cities were bad places where you could get murdered...and here I am 15 years later with a family and still not murdered! LOL!
So I want to be cautious about where in El Paso I move. Hubby's office will be right off I-10 at Pellicano and Lee Trevino. I can transfer (and take a step-down) at a store in Sunland Park Mall, and my closest family lives in south Las Cruces. So I was thinking Sunland Park? Is it actually TX or is it NM? How does that work if we live in NM but work in TX? Hubby is required to live within 30 minutes of the office, so I think anything closer to Cruces is too far.
Our predicted budget will be $800-$1000/month for a rental. We cannot buy because we currently own a house in Rio Rancho, NM that will not appraise for what we owe on it, so we will be putting it up for rent.
My head is starting to spin with all the preparations!!!
Are there any MOMS Club chapters nearby or how about BUNCO?!?
Any positive opinions or advice?

Sunland Park is NM. I have several co-workers who live in NM and work in Texas. They like it that way due to property taxes and the different state requirements such as your vehicle inspections. However, you could also live in El Paso on the westside. Las Cruces is not too far away.
Anyhoo......Welcome!!!! And congrats to your hubby.

Maybe you can introduce ELP to this game. It is a clean fun family game.

New Mexico has lower property taxes but Texas has no state income tax.
The Sunland Park exit to Lee Trevino is just at the edge of your 30 minute requirement in rush hour.

There are several Bunco groups here - fun game. I'm not up on all the charter schools, but Chapin is a charter in science and math. It's close to Ft. Bliss and considered to be in the northeast part of town.
I'll let the others make all the recommendations as to housing, side of town to live on, etc. Welcome to El Paso and please, forget all the horror stories you've heard. I came here 35+ years ago, raised a family, been steadily employed - no complaints from me.

Magnet programs:
There are six Magnet Programs in the El Paso Independent School District; each has a unique focus. Students may have a choice to attend Austin High’s Sandra Day O’Connor Criminal Justice and Public Service Academy; Bowie High’s International Business Academy; Chapin’s Pre-Engineering Program; Coronado’s International Baccalaureate Program; El Paso High’s Dual Language [Connecting Worlds/Mundos Unidos] Program; or Jefferson/Silva’s Health Care Professions Magnet.
My son is looking at going to Austin since they offer a forensic course. However, he may just attend the El Paso Community College HIgh school program. He'll graduate with his Associates and then move on to college to study his major and minor.

FOrgot to add there's El Paso Independent School Districts Center for Career and Technology. My son teaches there. Here's a link with more info.
