Default El Paso - one of the safest cities in the country!

Interesting article here: Wall Street Journal - Notable & Quotable - WSJ.com

Quote:
"If the immigrant community represents a large proportion of the population, you're likely in one of the country's safer cities. San Diego, Laredo, El Paso -- these cities are teeming with immigrants, and they're some of the safest places in the country."
Unites States Cities Crime Rates

El Paso is once again the 2nd safest large city in the U.S.A

Default Other factors to consider...

My uncle is a retired DEA agent from El Paso originally, ended up in Mexico City, then DC. According to him, not all crime is reported. Also, not all murders are reported either, depending on how the murder was committed, and the legal status of the victim.

There is also unreported crime for fear of retribution, or one's legal status, whether the perp. or victim. The fact that crime is low is cold comfort for anyone considering a move to live, or have a career in El Paso. The FBI even warns against using the crime statistics to rate a city, most likely because of what I mentioned above.

It would take a HUGE swing, a HUGE amount of cover up, and a massive fear of retribution for El Paso stats to be completely off. I am sure the crime rate is slightly higher than the stats report but it is not like crime or murder is rampant in El Paso. That is quite amazing considering what is going on in Juarez. El Paso is quite safe.

Yes because the annual number of murders here never seems to budge from 3 no matter how many murders there are. I guess if someone in this city gets murdered over in Juarez, it can't be counted, if the body is found just outside city limits it also doesn't have to count. I think they leave out the homeless who have been murdered too because maybe they aren't originally from here.

There have already been several cartel executions or drug trafficker executions here in this town already this year, at least a couple women are missing - but one is from Las Cruces and only said she was going to El Paso so they won't count, especially if the body found the other day was one because it wasn't found within city limits.

Some things are just accepted as normal here. Like asking your neighbors if they've seen your lost dog and getting beat up, a simple question can turn into a big neighborhood brawl.

Default Some things never change...

I'm surprised more people were involved than the two parties. There is more behind the story, a whole neighborhood fighting? Also, it is not over, there will be vengence down the road, 'never fails.

I posted in another thread about clubs, and El Paso. Grand Opening, Grand Closing, to quote Chris Rock. This is what happens when people don't have jobs, and too much idle time.

El Paso has been and remains one fo the safest cities in the nation despite the drug civil war just accross the border. So how can a murder not be reported? Aren't a lot of the murdered victim's bodies just found? Also you mention that some murders might not be counted since they are outside the city limits, well the same thing applies to every city in the nation. Even if you include all of El Paso County, it would still be one of the safest in the nation.

Oh man, some of this stuff is better than the Sunday funnies. Dead bodies in the bar parking lots. Getting beat up for looking for your dog. Whoo. That was good stuff.
