Thinking of leaving El Paso... it's too low class and uneducated
El Paso is low class and uneducated, that's why people like Chico's Tacos. Yes, it is cheap; that's about it. The sauce is all it has.

Reason: Post #1-10 were moved from a separate "Chico's Tacos" thread into this thread created especially for them.

There is no need to go there with your comments about ELP. I agree that Austin is a better place to earn a living and there is lots to do here. I understand that you are Austin bound correct? Well once you get here you will find that MOST austinites will discriminate against you. You will be automatically labeled as under qualified and uneducated.
My advise to you is this. Do not be a closet El Pasoan. I proudly admit and show that I came from El Paso. MOST Austinites respect that. In my circle of influence...MOST have changed their view of EL Paso.
It seems that you are college age and ready to spread your wings correct? You will probably trash talk El Paso just to be accepted and you will probably shun some of the better traditions that were handed to you from your parents. MOST Austinites will not respect you for that and you will NEVER be truly accepted as one of them.
Even though I am accepted as an Austinite by MOST I do not wish to be. MOST locals are jerks and very liberal. El Paso is a better place to raise a family if you dont mind earning low wages. Even though El Paso is Pro Democat MOST are conservative and dont even know it. That is a seperate subject in itself.
Choose wisely your social circles and be a PROUD El PASOAN.

No, my plans are to leave Texas all together. But as a stop gap I may be temporarily living in Houston; it depends on the turn of events. At any rate, any change of scenery would do for now.

I wouldn't go around announcing I'm from El Paso. Even if I've lived here most of my life now, I wasn't born in EP but in another city in TX, so it's technically true. And as far as qualifications, I'll do that on my own. I don't think it would work out for anyone anyways to just randomly move somewhere where you don't know anyone and look for work. You'd probably end up on the street. I don't know anyone in Austin.

So Austinites are both discriminatory and respectful of El Pasoans? Interesting contradiction. Moot, as well, since like I said, I'm not going to Austin. But thanks for the input.

No, I'm freelance with computers related skills. It's possible I will go back to school to get a more advanced degree, but that depends on a lot of things.

Hey, I've said it myself that there's significantly worse places than El Paso, but that doesn't mean I'll recommend it. In the case of a retiree, or something like that, it may suit them to live here. Not me. I'm not saying I'm not biased, but fact is I'm tired of the place. I'm tired of looking at the same people, listening to the same people doing the same habits; I outgrew this place and the people here in my teens and it's been hell since. If army wives like it here, hey, good for them; I'm sure it will be a nice safari adventure for them. Me, I can't help but trash talk EP because it's grated on my nerves to the very core for quite a while now.

Well, if I am, it's thanks to EP, but I tried really hard to rise above it, and at least in spirit I believe I have. As far as the sauce, maybe they add caffeine, which is addictive. But what sucks about Chico's is their menu. They sell nothing but the same stuff and that's pretty lousy even for a fast food place. And they don't even sell tacos, so the name makes no sense. Those little taquito things are not tacos.

What is with El Pasoans and Austin? There's other states than Texas, you know.
Btw, in case you haven't figured it out, my forum "status" was an inside joke, but some took the bait here. Yes, we always hear about Austin when it comes to EP hate. Well, I'm not going to Austin, just fanning the flames, sorry.

It's good to leave when you get tired of a place. Nothing wrong with doing that, trying other places.
The only thing - people in other places tend to do the same habits they always do. Everywhere you go, people can be annoying, so it's just if they're annoying in a way that you like or can deal with more.
If you end up where it's cold and cloudy, you may find yourself thinking of El Paso, how the sun is always shining here. Or maybe where you go it'll be so humid, you have to sit inside all day and you'll think back to how the air in El Paso was so much more comfortable, how you could always go outside and do pretty much whatever you wanted to do.
Or you'll like the way the people are at first, they'll seem competitive that people here don't seem but that can grate on one's nerves too. Or maybe you'll end up somewhere out there and really like it or just feel more at home in another place. But -- El Paso will still have a mountain sitting in the middle of it, it will still be basking in the sun, and the wind storms still will come every spring here, Octobers here will always be filled with the smell of roasting chiles, watermelons and avocados sold from a roadside truck.
A lot of people people leave and never look back. Others will miss aspects of this place. A lot of people come and go from here.

I am one of those people that think of EL Paso often. Unfortunately I will not be going back for awhile. But NEVER say NEVER right?

Well it is a shame that folks like you leave El Paso. I agree with you on alot of things you hate about El Paso (certain types of people, the mentality, the job market, etc.). MOST of Austinites are discriminatory cause of the Good Ol' Boy network in place here. I have proven many wrong and like to hear my stories about EL Paso and have often said that they would like to visit some time. Some have and were glad they did.
Good luck to you and I hope you land somewhere you want to be.
Again it is a shame you are leaving...EL Paso needs more out-of-the-box-think-big-in-small-places-forward-thinking people to make a difference there.

Of course, I know that, but at least a change can relieve some of the repetition. And at any rate, different things annoy different people, and EP just rubs me the wrong way. And to be honest, so does Texas, Texas politics, the good ol boy networks, the wannabes of such, the mediocrity, the continuing dominance of the Republican joke party, buffoons as governors. I do know the negatives of Houston, for example. But I have basically ran out of positive reasons to stay in EP. I love my family but they're not the kind of people I want to be around all the time. So there's nothing left but negatives for me, and recent times have just added more.

To be honest, the weather is the last complaint I have about EP. Yeah, it's hot, but it never mattered to me that much. Furthermore, I actually prefer colder weather (within reason). Even when I used to hike Franklin Mts trail, I preferred to do it in the winter.

The problem is, imo, that in EP they still are competitive, but not about the right things. The way I see it, the attitude here was the perfect training grounds for me to be able to shrug off the apathy when you don't initially get your way and instead keep going.

Sure, you can paint poetic childhood memories out of any region, but me and EP separate now. It was NOT kind to me. But I wish the good people in it the best.

Maybe it is, but the majority rules.

The sad thing is that on the larger scale, my thinking is anything but radical. The thing is that the city is always behind the times. At any rate, the majority rules, and I don't see nearly enough people with interest to raise this town above an uneventful little host for Fort Bliss. For every optimist who would try, they're would be hundreds of dimwitted sideline critics and cynics.

El Paso is extremely democrat so it's not the Texas politics that affect anything here. You might like a state like Michigan which has cooler weather and the democrat politics at the state level.
I think moving and trying other places is a good thing to do. See what other places have to offer - and probably you will never come back here to live - but that's okay too.

False, EP is not very political. They vote straight ticket Democrat, true, which is at least as bad as the rest of Texas politics. And at any rate, isolated local politics are hardly relevant in the bigger picture. It just makes it more of a non-entity and the insignificant, neglected step child of Republican dominance. What I am not looking for is a cherry picked example of the other extreme. I may end up in Indiana.
