Here's an example: market value on my home is approx 150K and taxes are over 3000/yr.

A close friend lives in NM and his place has a market value of approx 210k and taxes are $800.

I'll be retiring to NM in a few years.

Cities, states and other governments need revenue to operate; better taxes than borrowing.

And New Mexico has an individual income tax while Texas doesn't and has steadfastly refused to pass one despite years of trying. And yet taxes are lower across the state line in New Mexico than they are in El Paso.

it sounds like you're doing OK, your house may still be taxed from an old appraisal from the tax assessor. I'm hearing more like $4000+ particularly in 79912.

I am a third generation El Pasoan. My taxes now are the same as the payment on first house in 1980. After parents pass on (still live here as well), I will be moving. I do not intend on spending my retirement days here. Been here long enough.

I'll chime in but I'm not a native El Pasoan :-) This is the first city that we have lived in that we both looked at each other and said "You know we could retire here-happily". I'm sure as you can tell by my screenname that we have lived just about everywhere, or at least one of us has-he has been a lot more places than I have because he is the one active duty.

When he reaches retirement age (he will retire at 30 yrs, or 32 yrs it just depends) he will be about 49 yrs old. I hope we aren't considered to old and liver spotty ;-D.

El Paso is a vibrant city, it's growing quickly and it has yet to be impacted by the Division of soldiers that will be stationed here at Fort Bliss (warning: from experience I can say that-yes, El Paso is going to be directly impacted by that number of Soldiers coming here and at first it might be a bit painful in certain ways but eventually it will smooth out). Hopefully it will smooth out quickly and their spending will benefit El Paso more than the number of soldiers flooding here will disrupt it.

As of right now El Paso is on the top of our list for retirement (it's the only city on the list as a matter of fact!). We love this area, we love the culture (unique), we love the weather and the benefit would be as we grow older we would be able to access the benefits that are extended to him (and to me through him) after so many years of service.

I'm not sure we would retire to the city proper but may live in one of the multitude of suburbs that are springing up in the sprawl.

Somewhere in the mountains. Ruidoso or Cloudcroft, most likely.
