My wife and I will be moving to either one of these 2 cities soon. We are in our early thirties, no kids yet. (but planning on it very soon). We have high paying job offers in both cities, but significantly more in El Paso (30-40% more). We have been to both cities and while El Paso seemed like a decent city, we fell in love with Austin and everything it has to offer (music, sports, lakes, etc). Would you sacrifice extra-income to live in Austin?

Money isn't always everything, where is your family? what are your hobbies? what do you like to do in your free time? El Paso dry very dry climate, desert 100% and far away from cities like San Antonio or Dallas but safe city.

My nearest family is in the east coast, so I guess that's not a factor either way. As hobbies, I mainly like playing soccer and playing the drums as well. So Austin would be nice as I could probably put together a band and play clubs in my free time! To be honest, I am really more excited about Austin, but the extra money in El Paso is causing me to question myself.

Dollar for dollar, you will get more for your buck in El Paso. So that 30% will get you more than you actually might think.

Thats a tough one pfc, I'm born and raised in El Paso but lived in Austin for two years and now live in San Antonio. I love El Paso and go back every chance i get but in my opinion it doesn't even compare to Austin.

I've spend plenty of time in both places. Austin worse traffic but more going on. Austin has horrible summers. Austin is close to other places - a few hours from the coast and Houston. They are quite different.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm not too worried about the summers, since I've lived in Florida for 4 years. I've heard about the bad traffic as well. Mistabinks I completely agree with you, I know that 30% will go a long way. I also like to travel a lot, so I guess being in Austin I would be better connected to flights. The problem is deep inside I really want to be in Austin, but am having a hard time talking myself out of the extra cash in El Paso.

I wouldn't choose Austin if the income was going to be higher there.

El Paso has near perfect weather, plus a mountain right in town. Austin would be too hot and humid I think, but if Austin is what you like better, I think you should go with Austin. Myself, I'd choose El Paso.

Malamute thanks for you reply. What's the main difference in weather between El Paso and Austin. Is El Paso dryer during the summers?

Red face Having...

Growing up in ELP and graduating from the University of Texas at Austin...I myself prefer Austin as it has so much to offer compared to ELP..there is so much to do there...the transportation system is better..there are better jobs..and so much to do there..like South by Southwest..too many to name here...the humidity does not bother me either...as I live in Dallas now..!.and you sure are close to other cities like Houston and San Antonio!
