The new Conservative government's plan is to: (1) raise the VAT, (2) raise the capital gains tax, and (3) cut all spending across the board by 20 to 30 percent except for, wait for it, health care and foreign aid! If we had such conservatives in this country I might consider becoming a conservative.

It's a balanced approach. I'm sure there are problems with it but any Republican would be destroyed by his/her own party for even considering such a plan.

The "left" in Europe more often adopt Classical Liberal positions, which is actually right winged (Ron Paul right winged, not RINO neo-con "right wing"). The "right" in Europe tend to act like progressives with more government intervention.

People in America have their terminology backwards. Hayek often pondered why Americans called right wingers conservatives, when Classical Liberalism was the de facto right winged philosohpy.

Well if you thnik we are in trouble;they have been living on the edge of their GDP for decades. That is why both parties rejected Obama's plan on amounts of stimulus spending. They do not want to endup like Greece. You can do much when you are right at 100% of spending of GDP with government. Thatcher saved them once and how they are at that point again.Hopefully they get their house in roder and we do because they are our most relaible ally thru thick and thin.

From my impressions. The left in Europe tends to be straight up socialist. The right in Europe tends to be paternalistic, but if there are libertarians they tend to align with the right. I met very few American style libertarians while I lived there.

The point is the Conservatives have raised the capital gains tax. In this country, the supposedly socialist Democrats have a hard time doing that. For a Republican it would be political suicide. The last major Republican I had respect for was George Bush, Sr. He took a very difficult decision for the good of the country and was destroyed by his own party.

Entirely wrong. The left in Europe in general is for bigger government and more social programs....There is nothing Ron Paul/Libertarian about it.

The right does usually favor a reduction in spending.
