Well there wasn't much good news for democrats to cheer about in this election.

However, the victory of Harry Reid over Sharron Angle deserves to be mentioned. Harry was on the ropes this year for reelection. Unemployment reached 14.4% in Nevada. Although, no one ever did much of job of explaining "why" this was Harry's fault. It would have been more logical to blame the unemployment problem there on state political officials if the blame is to be put on individuals. Perhaps, the Bush Administration which had been in office for eight of the last ten years deserved the blame?

Anyway, pundits will say when all the votes were finally counted that nutty Angle beat herself. First, it was the statement that if she and her supporters didn't win they "might exercise their second amendment remedies" (which many thought might including shooting Reid or those they disagreed with). Second, she made a series of statements in which she claimed the IRS and income tax should be abolished, that social security should be "privatized", that thirteen year old girls impregnated by incest had no right to an abortion, and that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ought to be abolished.

What really gets me is some people actually suggested that Angle's views were "mainstream". Mainstream, my eye. This woman was a fruitcake. She wasn't a conservative. She was a reactionary. When the history is written about this election, it will be said that the Tea Party threw this race away by nominating Angle instead of more moderate Republicans like Tarkanian or Lowden. Too bad for the GOP. A couple of seats would have given them control of the Senate.

Than there was Harry Reid. Uncharismatic, old, a plodder, and caring a message many did not want to hear. But, Harry has been underestimated before. He won two of his four senate races by under 1000 total votes. Angle and her supporters just never quite understood Reid or what made him tick. The fact is that whatever his faults, Reid is a fighter and he never gave up, no matter how tough the race looked at times. Right up until the end, people were predicting an Angle victory. Yet, Reid just kept hammering away.

Rejoice Nevadans. You made a choice you have a right to be proud of. You proved you would not settle for a mediocre nut with half-baked opinions just because times were tough and your incumbent left some things to be desired. Your decision may not have been an easy one, but it was the right one. You avoided being characterized as a laughingstock by picking the least-worst candidate. You have set an example for this nation during tough times.

I really wanted to see him go down the tubes, but it is good to see the Democrats have something to be happy about. It is about the only real surprise on their side.
