Watch for the results of the special election tomorrow in US Congressional District NY 26. This is an historically Republican district (Jack Kemp's old seat), but the Dem candidate has come from behind to make it a virtual dead heat. The Dems are running it as a referendum on Paul Ryan's Medicare plan, and the House budget vote.

This is the seat that became vacant when Rep Chris Lee resigned in the wake of his "shirtless" Craigslist add. Bet the party thought his seat was pretty safe when they gave him the boot!

We'll see what happens tomorrow...

The 2012 elections will offer a better clue. Until they happen predictions from either side are little other than idle speculation.

Indeed, a lot can change in a year and a half.

This will mean as much a harbinger of national politics for 2012 as the special election in NY-23 was in 2009.

one election will not give us a clue as to what is going to happen in 2012.

What you will see is the government unions spending millions and billions nationally with money the public would have never allowed them to have in pay or benefits if they had a say. Time to end unions in government, that is the lesson learned.
Outside of that, I am more interested in 2012.
Obamacare makes it necessary to remove Obama, the Senate control by Democrats and to increase in the House.
Obama lost many Jews, Whites and Independents. He's in big trouble.

So is the Democrat running as a big leftists or more like a conservative? I bet they are running right as usual to fake out the voters.

While I do agree it likely doesn't say much about 2012, I do think a difference exists between winning a special election in a marginal district, and winning a special election in a that favors the other side. NY-26 in considerably more Republican than NY-23.

Yet despite losing as much as you claim he is losing, Obama still leads every Republican in every poll......

Anyway, we can argue about that in another thread. The biggest issue by far in this race is over Ryan's plan to privatize Medicare.

Also, since there is Tea Party candidate in the race, we get a sneak-peak at what the vote split may be like in 2012 if Ron Paul decides to run as an Independant.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but as I tried to point out, this election is significant for these reasons:

1) A Dem is running strong in an historically GOP district.
2) The Dem candidate is making the race a referendum on the GOP House budget and Rep Ryan's Medicare Reform Plan.
3) There is a third-party Libertarian in the race- we'll see how he affects the split.

Off-year and special elections CAN be important. Look at Scott Brown's senate election in '09- it turned out to be a harbinger of doom for the Dems in '10.

If the Dem wins, NY26 may turn out to be a canary in the coal mine for GOP. If the Republican candidate wins, maybe it's a sign they're on firm ground for 2012.
